I've kept my MKH40 in a little pelican case for a while, now I have two 50s, they don't all fit, and they go inside a larger pelican case anyway. I'd like something like the Rycote Tubes, but I can't find just the tubes in the smaller MKH 40/50 size without buying the entire protector case (which I don't wan't, and thanks to a surprise bill, saving every penny matters right now.) Anyone know where I can get similar tubes in the proper size?

Not sure where you live (always helps to complete your profile ) but if you live in the USA, go to Home Depot and buy a piece of the proper size PVC plumbing pipe and some caps. I know there is a size that perfectly fits the MKH50 'cause I used them for years. They fit so well in fact that your have to rotate the mic a bit as you put it in the tube; the tube isn't exactly circular and the MKH50 will easily slide in at one orientation and be a tad sticky at the other. Capsule first so you can always fish it out with an XLR if needed. Doesn't damage the mic, either. Perfect solution and cheap as dirt. Oh, I put a bit of grey foam in each cap and cemented one on with PVC glue to complete the project.

They are expandable and have foam inserts so they should fit the 40 and 50 fine.

For storage, I use the factory plastic cases. For travel, I use those semi-hard EVA cases made for the Bose Mini Soundlink bluetooth speaker. As it turns out, they are the perfect length for the classic MKH20/30/40/50. I interleave a small Domke Wrap in between the mics and you can fit four 4 of them in each case. Plenty of protection for the MKH, which are pretty tough as it is. Sometimes, I just roll them up in Domke wraps and carry them in a backpack.

My understanding is that Rycote sell the tubes on their own without the Protector case.

Give Rycote a call and ask them - I am about to get several if these tubes on their own myself.

Thanks Mike, I'd seen those. My struggle is even completely closed they're 2" oversize, so I'd have to re-rig my case (which is already pretty packed) to accommodate the oversize tubes. They make tubes which do properly fit the MKH 40/50 they however, don't sell them separate from their case systems.

I'll do that, but being that they're UK based I may not have quite so much luck (shipping and all that.) Still, worth a shot!

Schoeps makes some telescoping tubes for mics that Redding sells, I have a brace of these for my SDCs since they protect quite well and allow a much denser pack (was also great for air travel carryon: small and transparent). There is a longer version for the Schoeps CMIT mics that might fit the Senns.? The tubes were $6 each, which is either expensive or cheap depending on your perspective. I keep an old 416 in my AKS case all the time as a backup, and used what Mr. Tourtelot suggests-- a short piece of scrap PVC pipe of the correct diameter, which allows all the other gak to be piled on top of the mic w/o damaging it.

will technically fit the mkh50 but its a tight fit so you have to leave part of it sticking up out of one half of the tube to be able to get it out. when you close it all up, its about double the length of the microphone and kind of a pain. wouldnt really reccomend
