I also have a few ideas for the rigging approach for the decca tree, but perhaps I should adress this on another topic that already exist on this subject, which picked my interest on some gear recommandations.

For the gaff tape yeah I know them pretty well, I'm coming from a cinema background, we use all kinda of gaffer tapes, I know the ones that leaves nothing behind an sticks well.

Please tell the English about this. They wrap microphone cables with vinyl electrical tape and they are all covered with glop.

Yikes

we use electrical vinyl tape (Barnier) on XLR's, but we would never use that on mics !

(just to go back on Blu-Tak paste) ; I can use that at the back on the sphere to make a good seal and insure that it sticks well, or I should only use foam ? (since there will be quite of a gap with MK-012, since only the very tip of the capsule will touch the interior of the APE hole)

You'll be fine with blu-tack. With the MK-012 there is a little ridge on the edge of the capsule which does affect the pattern in the top octave. In theory you want the front of the ball to be at the diaphragm and not necessarily at the edge of the body, but I don't know if that makes any real difference in practice.

Hum... maybe I can leave the back open, but I'll something to hold the APE on the MK-012 capsule, perhaps using some elastic bands around the sphere and locked within the shock mount could do the trick.

As I mentioned, I believe they are made of poplar, which is a hardwood and so has a very tight and smooth grain that tools cleanly but is not a heavy wood like oak or maple.

You don't want to wrap anything around the ball; that will interfere with it's function.

Once you make one you will see that it weighs very little and it doesn't take much to hold it in place. A couple of wraps of tape between it and mic will provide enough friction for a snug fit.

Just for clarity I am in the UK and never see electrical tape or masking tape used due to residue issues. (On cables)

Gaffa tape we use a lot for everything. Have held broken bones in place with it! Fixed cars, used as a mic clip etc.

It's fine if you rip it up same day but leave it for a year or two and it gets tricky.

My personal favourite is Vinyl Hazard tape which I deploy everywhere and lifts up beautifully.

Edit: I see the Decca book has a section on sticky tape!

For the snug-fit on my DIY APEs I use turns of Frog Tape.

Also use it for temp fixing of cables to stands, taping cables to floors, endless uses; much less money than Gaffer tape. It's high-visibility green color is useful for marking floors around stands. Plus, the lidded box it comes in is handy for storing small parts, etc.

Much sturdier than blue painter's tape; the paper and the adhesive are both stronger, and yet comes off just as clean.

In 1", 1.5" or 2" widths; I keep 1" and 2" on hand.
