At Avatar I've used:
Kick: AKG D112 (in/out depending on the head)
Kick: U47 FET off axis (reverse phase, with a small "tent" around the drum and mics)
Snare Top - SM57
Snare Bottom - SM57
HiHat - KM84
Toms - MD421's
Overs - AKG C414EB's
Room - U87 reflected off high wood panel
Room - U87 walk around wearing headphones till it sounds good

So glad I can finally put up some pictures here of my new studio. The studio was finished 2 weeks ago and this is the drum setup for the first album project.

Overheads: C42's in x/y
Kick in: D112
Kick out: Yamaha subkick
Snare: SM57
Hi hat: R121 (probably will not need this come mix time)
Floor: U195
Mono room: R-121 pointing at the floor

We were aiming for a fairly mono-ish drumsound with quite some room sound. The R-121 room mic went into a TG2 preamp and got nuked with a Distressor.
Wonderfull room sound with a very strong centre channel. Worked out great .

The room looks great. I'm curious as to why the diffusors are spaced with the flat tall between them and not in clusters. The inset mounting looks really great.

Dirk, I completely agree with that approach. I love the sound of crushed room mics.

Good question, I would have to ask Thomas Jouajean from Northward, he designed the rooms. At least practically it would have been a lot more difficult to mount these (30cm deep, 50+kg a piece) against walls and ceiling.
I am not sure there is an additional positive effect if they are mounted against eachother.

Anyway, for a relatively small room, the room sounds very spacious. Not like large with a rever tail, but in a kind of "longer/more early reflections" kind of good way.
Hard to describe I guess, but the mics need virtually no eq to sound good and there is great depth from overheads and room mic.

Some curious mic'ing there... not unusual, just curious to me.

SM7 on hats. I've done this and know some others who do it routinely but I've never gotten crisp results out of it, never gotten anything out of it that wasn't already in the overheads. What's your take on it?

D112 on Floor Tom. Again, the same. To me, the consistency of using 421s on all toms beats the mismatch but I'm curious as to your take on the results.

SM87 on snare? Or is it a beta57 variant? Perhaps I can't clearly see it due to picture size.

Finally, is that a TLM103 about 18" back from the snare aimed at the side?

An audio sample(s) would be great if you have the time!

I like the SM7 on hats, especially for heavier rock where there isnt too much hihat articulation. Try it

I love the D112 on the low floor tom. He only used it for certain spots and the extra girth was awesome!

It is a beta57. I have been trying it for a bit now. I wish i had a consistent source so i could get a definitive feeling on it, but its not there yet.

Yes, its a 103. I like to have 1 or 2 experiment mics in each session. A lot of times in that position i just smash it to death and bring it up under the mix. Adds some something to the kick and snare.

I dont have these files anymore. I tracked it for a band and they took the files to do all their overdubs. If they ever finish it i will post it. Hell, i would love to hear it myself. HAHA

It has no samples, no drums bus processing and no added reverb.

Not yet. We're finishing up tracking and start mixing in a couple of weeks. I will post a sample by then. Drums turned out very nice!
