Please List all known dual channel preamps with SPDIF output.

I've got the Audient Mico. It's nice!

+1 on Mico, it sounds great and the additional controls give me flexibility for experiments!

I will put also my other preamp Focusrite ISA one but only...one channel.

The Rane ML 1. Essentially a two channel version of the oft-recommended MS 1 with digital outs.

I noticed there was not a thread dedicated to this exact subject so i made it. Thus the entire reason for this forums existence, to create a database of info that is searchable. Ie the simple thread subject, and question. Thanks for the positive input, im sure everyone who searches this will love seeing your negativity!

I guess if it's for the purpose of cataloging info that's fine. We have so many people coming on here with these demands for non-subjective info (that are usually answered with a quick browse of the nearest retailer's website) it's frustrating - forgive my gut reaction. Although maybe if you'd explained your purpose in the first post...

2) For some reason, S/PDIF preamps are hard to find and when I found the other thread, I was very happy.

It's like this, but the OP was asking for these for use with ribbon mics. And it its not very easy to find which preamps have SPDIF outputs without looking at each one, and looking at each retailer which carry separate brands.

The DBX 386 is a stereo unit with spdif out. It's usable.

There aren't really that many stereo preamps with spdif. I'm surprised more manufacturers don't make them as they are a logical "next step" for people with two channel interfaces. For instance, if you had an MBox and you wanted to upgrade your preamps and your converters, you could get an API A2D and really bring those to pieces of your signal chain to another level. A "bedroom" recordist often doesn't need more than two channels of simultaneous input. Rather than spend a lot of money on an interface with a lot of inputs (which often don't offer an improvement in quality AD Conversion / Preamp quality), it might be wiser to spend your money on a high quality stereo preamp with digital output.

Any preamp at all can produce SPDIF if you can be bothered to connect it to an A/D converter with SPDIF out. Isn't it restrictive to rule out a bunch of excellent two channel preamps just because connecting two XLR cables from their outputs to an A/D converter is apparently not an option?

the entire reason for this forum's existence is for people who are interested in audio gear to have a conversation about that gear.

The "searchable database" is a wonderful byproduct of that conversation, but I don't come here for the "database" and I certainly don't come here to be a drone working to build that database.

posts like this ^ ("conversation") add a lot of truth and an interesting twist to what would otherwise be a dry "database" listing of objects with a certain feature


analog preamp technology is relatively "mature" - a great preamp today will always be a great preamp.

A/D converter technology is still "evolving" - improvements are possibly still to be expected.

buying a preamp that ties you down to a specific converter is possibly limiting down the line, so there certainly might be an advantage to considering separate components.

Used a DBX 386 on a TON of sessions. Very workable preamp. A little brash, but kind of a cool character. If you absolutely need a S/PDIF pre on a budget, this is a great option.

It's both. A searchable database and a place to have conversation.

Adding an extra rackspace of converters seems silly to me, but I guess if you have the room in your rack.

Plus there is a range of converters for hifi (rca) at a budget.

Would be good to include a list of stereo analogue to S/PDIF converters, especially those more suited to even esoteric gear and needs.

Also the other way, S/PDIF to analogue for the otb mix duties.
Could be included here as related.
