BlueNan,
High and Low pass filters on the Aphex 612 (2 channel rack) or 9611 module (1 channel series 9000 module), KEY input allow frequency selected gating. The main difference between it and the 622 is that the 622 has a parametric key filter with one knob for frequency and the other for bandwidth (Q). The 612 has a knob each for low cut and high cut filters that can give you any frequency band you want the gate to respond to. The filters let you dial in the gate as to what triggers it so that it will respond to the floor tom without the snare opening the gate, etc.
This thread gets into it a bit:

To use the filter(s) by itself you will have to use sidechain / key out. So to use in combo with the gate instead of just how it triggers the gate you could use one channel of a 612 as a filter into the other channel as a gate. Frankly there are many other devices to filter such as EQ's and even crossovers that would serve the same purpose you are looking at.
