I just bought a used Sebatron VMP4000e for $999. The store was selling it “as is” and when i asked why the person wasn’t sure because the person who tests units that come in wasn’t there. I decided to buy it anyways. It’s an April 2005 model.
When trying it out I notice the 4th channel is cutting out when if I touch the polarity switch. It’s loose. If I lightly move the switch to the right spot the audio is fine.
That being said, the channels are a bit noisy.. but that’s to be expected from tubes isn’t it?
I opened up the unit and noticed there is one screw missing underneath the PCB board. Nothing is loose inside so I’m not sure how big a deal that is.
Anyone know how to get a unit repaired in the US? Pictures attached if anyone wants to give a virtual diagnosis ha.
If you have noisy channels it most likely is due to old tubes. A new set would be much quieter.
I've got a newer Sebatron vmp4000e and it runs very very quiet. I've attached some photos of the insides so you can see how the manufacturer has evolved and upgraded the design over the years.
Your unit is dated 2005 which makes it twenty years old. This particular one is about eight years old.
I have two of them which I use almost daily and I'm considering getting the VMPQuadPlus to add to
my collection for another four channels.
My recommendations are :
1- Replace the tubes with a new set. This will get the hiss noise floor down if the current tubes are old.
2- Install a metal shield between the power supply and the main board.
3- Move the input trasformers to the back corner of the chassis and
rotate them by 90 degrees as this will improve EMF isolation between
the input transformers and the power supply.
4- Tighten the nut on the channel 4 phase switch.
I hope that helps you or your tech.
There probably would be other changes that could bring it up to the spec of the newer versions.
Although might be easier to just get a new unit.
