I was listening to the colares which is highly thought of on audio test kitchen and quite surprised to learn it’s a fet mic. I put up the Telefunken Elam 251 and u47 just as reference points listening to mics there.

I know it’s just that site which unfortunately doesn’t have a single decent male vocal to listen to but the colares to me sounds very very close to the u47, yet i learned that it’s meant to based on an Elam 251. I think its edge terminated. It just sounds so close to the 47 on there and absolutely nothing like a 251. It had a very tight kind of presencey sound heavy in mids not at all airy or fluttery

I’m weighing up a purchase and am also really interested in any experience with the oc818 and whether people think it’s more like a 251 in character (I could simulate the tube).

Does anyone owning these mics particularly the Roswell have any opinions on this?

let me tell you a 'secret':

if a rather unknown manufacturer in our industry names his products after world-famous models, you can be sure that the imitation products have almost nothing to do with the original! that doesn't mean that the imitation products can't be useful tools...

different situation with the oc-818: this IS the new 414!

The 818 doesn’t sound much like the new 414s. What I heard in demos, it’s somewhat close to the sought after 414eb but with a flatter response. But that tells us nothing because of the things you can (and probably should) do with its frequency dependent polar patterns.

i admit i should not have written about an unspecified incarnation of the 414...

anyway, i've used every model of the the 414, i've had old brass capsule 414's, newer eb-models with nylon capsules, i still have a pair of c-414b/uls and since they got introduced a few oc-818's - for me, the oc-818 is by far the best reincarnation of the 414, regardless of age/capsule/model!

dunno about clones from other manufacturers though; i've never used any.
