Hey everyone,

Before I even get to what I was going to ask, I just want this to be clear. This is NOT an attack thread, NOT an opinion thread, and NOT a dissect my motive thread. Im just looking for some production advice, etc.

Basically I already know that most of these sounds came from the Roland Cards, etc. My question for you guys is in your honest opinion, what would be the best way to get some sounds close to and along the lines of this production as well as the rest of the Cheiron Studios Productions and even into the early years of Maratone with modern Soft Synths, etc. The Orchestra Hits, the Drum Samples, Synths, Pads, etc.

Hey dude. I think you're right on about the Roland libraries, from what I've heard.

All I know is THAT SHIT KICKS 100% ASS!!! Some of the best pop music EVER, IMO!

Why don't you use the same Roland synths? JV - series synths go for around 200$ nowadays, and they get you there.

As far as I know, there's no software versions available from SR-JV card soundsets.

Get yourself a JV2080 and google sr-jv cards. There's a site around where you can listen to just about every sound in every one of them cards. Then buy the ones you need from the e-bay. You can fit eight of them in one 2080.

That's def. a possibility, I just was curious if there was anything modern that could get me in the ball park. Im not trying to copy, just take some influence from these productions and some of the sounds fit quit well into my stuff.

Would a JV-1010 work for this?!?! I just realized my dad has had one stored away for years.

JV1010 is a 2080 with limited everything. Only one available card slot etc...

But yes, it would. Has the same sounds as 2080 or 1080. Takes the same cards. And plays nicely with a computer too.

I'm not gonna lie, Im more than pumped now...HAHA. What cards do you think are THE most crucial to the Max sound?

Dance and Vintage synth are the most expensive of the sr-jv range. They gou for around 100$, even more.

I got one of the XV5080 they had at Cheiron back in the days.
It still had their multi-presets stored. Funny :-) With the titles of the songs.

I resettet it though.
They basically used the stock sounds (obviously). I think it's all part of the arrangement.

You should check the discontinued "Dance Expansion card" (if i remember it right).
I got one in my 5080. Lots of the sounds are very typical Cheiron-sounds.

Yes alot of the Roland JV series Dance card was used.
Also I heard they used the Emu Vintage Keys and maybe some Korg (possibly the Triton) for some stuff too.
I heard Denniz Pop (the guy who gave Max the batton) used SE1 for the Bass, so I am thinking that unit was always used as well.
The JV Vintage card is pretty good and has 256 sounds for most JVs but it adds another 256 sounds if you use it with a JD990 module (the sister version of the infamous JD800 synth, which was used by a lot of cats in the day too, including Teddy Riley, Babyface etc)
Remember the 1010 is a small piece of work and does not have too many functions. Also the XV5080 is super clean. The 2080 or 1080 have better converters so I would recommend scanning Ebay and then picking up one of those.
All in all, as said before, its all about the arrangement and the song. I know of guys with the best of the best synth line up, but don't know what to play where and how to arrange those so it's all about getting the right production with what you have. Larger than Life was that BSB that had come out of 'Everybody' and those guys were on that freak someone out type sound and those patches and synth stabs (very common on most synths) were executed for that reason.
Having said all these, I have to say that Max and all those cats would have got their ideas of early RnB which had all those (listen to a Dallas Austin or Michael Bivins produced track.. aka. even early TLC, Motownphilly) accents and feel and just made it 'pop', which when packaged with artists like Britney/BSB just had a wider market appeal.

Cakewalk do plugins for all DAWs of the EMU stuff (Proteus, Planet Phatt/Mo Phatt etc) Those hits and sounds were definitley used imo from what I can hear. And they were listed on the Cheiron Studios website.

Anyone know what Hit Lamp is???

A lamp that flashes when the hit is made heh

The hit lamp was a gimmick, a nutsy thing. I believe it was one of those round, wallmounted household lamps that you turn on/off by pushing the light glass in - you "hit" it. It was located quite close to the console, probably not on the wall.

The gimmick was, that when the song/mix they are working on is "good enough", when it has crossed over the threshold of becoming a hit .. the lamp will turn on, and then they know and can stop working. So they kept working and tweaking, trying to coax that lamp into coming on. I've heard several big shot names say it actually worked

That place was an adult kindergarden, and they were doing all kinds of standing and everyday insane things, and playing computer games. It has been said that first week Max Martin was there, DJ Stonehouse smeared the entire phone handle up with peanut butter, and then went and used another phone to call the place up, and Max Martin answered the phone .. and that was the laughing stock for days.

So it's not surprising they came up with "a hit lamp" and that they included that in the gear list, tounge in cheek.

Hey guys, I picked up a JV-1080 today for $170 and also got the Super Sound Set expansion card with it. I'm also looking to pick up the techno and dance card as well...That said, this thing sounds amazing...It blew me away. I plugged my oxygen 49 into it and the sounds are perfect...I recognized more than a few from hit records of the last 15 years.

I'm new to logic. 3 months in. I can program midi using piano roll and record audio no problem. I can edit pretty well too. I'm not a newbie at audio recording, I came from Pro Tools, but I'm a newbie to logic and serious midi recording.

All I want to do it take the midi tracks that I have already programmed and use the sounds in the JV on those tracks. How do I do this?
I've read some forums about message banks and multi instruments and logic environments...these are terms i've never heard before...where do i start?

when all these guys are doing all that are they loading the roland sounds into logic to then use without the roland connected? if so, then i guess its worth the work and figuring out.

yes there is a sample library out there on ebay. actually pretty good. im wondering if im going to order one for myself.. since most of it is anyway so close to the real hardware... of course hardware is good but a kontakt library is not a bad option.. but these libraries are massive.. 30 GB+

YES.. you have to set your JV 2080 in multi timbral mode... you have to kinda program it so it works with your daw for sequencing... or standalone sequencer..
go from patch mode into performance mode. on the template PR-A
hold down perform and hit patch button so u get into performance mode. then u pick the sound you want.. pm me if you need help on t his
