Anyone know what Hit Lamp is???
The hit lamp was a gimmick, a nutsy thing. I believe it was one of those round, wallmounted household lamps that you turn on/off by pushing the light glass in - you "hit" it. It was located quite close to the console, probably not on the wall.
The gimmick was, that when the song/mix they are working on is "good enough", when it has crossed over the threshold of becoming a hit .. the lamp will turn on, and then they know and can stop working. So they kept working and tweaking, trying to coax that lamp into coming on. I've heard several big shot names say it actually worked
That place was an adult kindergarden, and they were doing all kinds of standing and everyday insane things, and playing computer games. It has been said that first week Max Martin was there, DJ Stonehouse smeared the entire phone handle up with peanut butter, and then went and used another phone to call the place up, and Max Martin answered the phone .. and that was the laughing stock for days.
So it's not surprising they came up with "a hit lamp" and that they included that in the gear list, tounge in cheek.
