Hey monkeyxx,
It gives me no pleasure hearing this. I'm with you - "How hard could it be?!" API and others do it well, but too many of the low-cost racks are really poor in this respect. Part of it is it costs money to do it properly and it's impossible to charge these prices and do it without trade-offs.
All I can say is we won't be part of the problem - our power rails are very clean. Ed has been spending the run up to production working hard on optimising the power supplies for both the analogue and digital bits. The unit is very thermally efficient now as well as we have a sexy custom-designed aluminium heatsink on the 16V regulator.
Would be curious to hear which rack you settle on and how it performs! Cheers monkeyxx
I ended up with a Lindell 510 Power MK II.
It is completely silent. The power XLR cable is too short, and I had to bend the pins so it could fit the power supply. My CAPI modules don't sit flush to the box they stick out a little in sort of a weird cattywompus angle. My Five Fish fits in there just fine. Switches on the back feel a little cheesy. XLR and DSUB are great connection options. Looks very sleek in the rack. I give it four stars out of five I guess, for the price.
My other rack is an old beat up API 500V. I used to think it was a bit wonky, but I've come to realize that it's better in a lot of ways than a lot of racks out there. I guess it's the standard, anyway. The API power supply puts out 16.5 volts on one of the rails which is slightly disconcerting, but there's never been a real issue in use. The soldering inside the API PSU looks like it was done by someone who is both drunk and blind, I posted a thread about this years ago.
So that is my rack situation, I'm settled for now (finally.)
I am curious, if you can answer me this question,
Why is it more expensive to build a silent tight fitting rack?
If the Midas had just had a quiet power supply it could have been a real game changer. I would have thought that would have been a question of engineering chops and not necessarily cost, but I've never designed a power supply.
