Same. It just sounds so lush and full. I've described it as 'what in my dreams, i thought a prophet 5 or one of those mythical, top expensive synthesisers would sound in person, before i actually played and owned some hardware synths.

Sequentials are good, but they somehow all have a similar sound.
Not bad in any way, but i've kinda gotten a bit tired of it (luxury issue, i know)
But the filter and resonance on the OB6 is amazing, love the bandpass as well... OBX might be 'more' synth (and more $) in general, but that filter is really unique.

Monosynth: Intelijel Cascadia
punch, big and bold. It kinda takes the spot an Arp 2600 or a Minimoog would fill musically for me.


I think it's cool we are starting to have modern synths that can fill the niche of those dusty fragile old ones, with modern advantages and great sound.
So much more exciting and interesting than paying ten grand for a cliché that might break any moment or even cheaply cloned iterations of them.

Behringer Pro 800 for the achievement of sounding great at an affordable price. Doesn't seem to be anything else that matches it in value.

Just really wish it were multitimbral.

That's twice now I've seen the Cascadia on here in the last couple posts. Damn.. Makes me want one even more.

For the insanely cheap price they go for (especially used), just buy 2 (or 3).

Man I really wanted the P6 but it was just too much so I got the Rev 2 instead hah. I love that thing but in the end, most of the time the sound of it just doesn't fit right in my projects. I think the majority of the sounds in my head are simply 'Roland flavored' from all the years of hearing/playing them and I cant ever get it to sit right in a mix. That SH-4d is a virtual box of all the best Roland tones in one spot so it's super easy to throw something out and make it work hehe.

That said I did replace a chord pad sample in a track yesterday with an awesome patch I made on the Rev 2.. The Roland wasn't cutting it, but the Rev 2 saved the day!

did your 2nd hand bargain one turn up?

It's really a shame that they made so few of them. Seems like it would be a hit if they made them in bigger numbers.

My OB-X8 purchase a few months ago has me struggling, as nothing sounds as good to me now, though I still adore and get lost in my PB12 in that special way where the interface takes you into its alternate dimension.

Don't really want to ever sell these 2, but I'm kind of stuck for analog gas now, as I can't find anything as good to add in. As someone mentioned, maybe a Korg prologue 2 would be fun?

If only Roland would make up for their sins and give us a vintage re-release of the best of their Jupiters. That would be another analog flavor I'd still like to have. ACB sounds good but just ain't real circuitry, maing!

Prophet 12 - and yeah it has digital oscillators, but people have mentioned Take/Teo 5 which has digital envelopes.

Oakley Modular, but and I know it's probably an unpopular choice here.... I love ALL the Behringer remakes ... except the Neutron.

Only if you use the third oscillator. Disregard it, bypass FX and it’s a 100% analog signal path. Definitely fits the category when used as such unlike other types of “hybrids”.

Moog One in theory, OB-X8 in practice. Truthfully, my ideal analogue synth doesn’t exist (and would be hybrid anyway).

So, if I take Peak, crank up the resonance and use its (analog as far as I know) filter as a VCO that would be applicable as well? There are a few hybrid synths that can be used like this: Minilogue XD, Pro 2, Prophet 12.

I get the point about using the filter as a VCO on the Peak, it’s a valid trick but it’s not the same as having dedicated analog VCOs. Using a self-oscillating filter gives you just one pitch, no real stacking, detuning, or complex interactions like you get with multiple VCOs. And using the filter in self-oscillation means you lose it for actual filtering.. there’s no second filter per voice to take over, so you’re sacrificing tonal shaping. Plus, self-oscillating filters only produce a sine wave, so there’s no waveform shaping, no mixing, sync, PWM, nothing.. just a bare tone. The Pro3, with its two true analog VCOs and fully analog signal path (if you skip the digital osc and FX), gives way more flexibility and depth in a traditional analog sense. It’s a different league.

Got me. I seemed to only see best MODERN synth in the post - ignoring the analog part by lack of close attention.

But the Waldorf does have analog filters and they do sound really good. It's kind of a do everything really well synth. Nothing like it.

But for best ONLY analog modern synth, it is the Moog One 16 voice - it's a total beast. The Aturia Polybrute 12 is the next best one. The keyboard is really the amazing part of it for me for the expressivity.

I have both as well. Why do you say that?

I found the Moog One to be far more expansive with some good programming. The OB X8 does not really get exciting for me until I get some Moog Moogerfooger delay on it.

But, I love to hear your perspective as I am likely missing something on the OB-X8! So funny how you decide on some synth and then hear how someone else is using it to completely change your mind!

I doubt you’re missing anything. It’s just that, despite the One being a great deep synth, I like the sound of the OB more so it ends up on more of my songs. I find I get a lot with a little with the OBX8, though I do wish it had the modulation options of the One. In the end, despite any bells and whistles, it all comes down to preference.
