I moved from KH310’s to One18’s. I’ve been a frequent poster in this thread about the switch, but to summarise my thoughts:
KH310:
- sound bigger, more impressive to clients
- much more microdetail, quite a zoomed in presentation
- more sub low end with a tighter low end presentation
- more forward high mids
- better at showing saturation - was like i could hear individual grains of distortion
- boring and uninspiring. devoid of character (someone here described them very accurately as a studio monitor for universities)
One18:
- better imaging and phantom centre
- better dynamics, both macro and micro
- noticeably better phase coherence
- potentially faster overall
- superior depth, easier to hear reverb and delay trails
- high frequencies easier to differentiate from one another
- more of a zoomed out presentation
- much more musical and inspiring
I would implore you to hear them both in the same space as they’re quite different presentations. KH310 is more typical studio monitor voicing.
Thanks for your description. I am currently trying to decide between the One18 and KH310 for my mix room. I’ve used the KH310 and my findings were similar to yours. I really liked them overall.
My understanding is that the One 18’s will be a very revealing speaker. However, are they also pleasing for playback? I have seen comparisons to NS10’s which I find helpful for decision making but atrocious to listen to. I spend a lot of time sitting back in my chair and listening with my eyes closed…..hoping the One 18 will allow me to space out and do that too?
Did the One18 completely replace the KH310 for you? Are you using other monitors as well?
Thanks.
