We have a several-year-old Maytag fridge (warranty expired) -- two doors on the upper level and a slide-in-and-out freezer compartment down below-- all in stainless steel.

Several weeks ago it began producing a vibration/noise at around 5k-- but like a rusty square wave. Not really loud-- but loud enough to DRIVE ME @#)$^ CRAZY!!

Its only when the compressor is on, and moving , shoving, or kicking the thing makes it go away-- but only temporarily. After several seconds it resembles the top of a tin can (slightly rusted and uneven) that is rotating at variable speeds entering my ears with maximum pain and bother.

CAN YOU TELL THAT THIS IS DRIVING ME NUTS?

If anyone has endured this before and know a fix PLEASE post! Internet research is not positive (as in live with it or buy a new one).

1. Call a service tech.
2. Get rid of it.
3. Move it out to the Garage.
4. Live with it.

Given that you're asking how to repair a domestic appliance in a location-recording subforum on a forum dedicated to audio mixing, I can understand how that might be the case.

hmm....if you pull it out from the wall can you see into the guts of it? if you can, you might be able to find the part that's vibrating and figure out a way to damp it or restrict its motion. A little duct tape or foam or whatever in the right spot could make a big difference.

I feel your pain - for us audio folks, noise can be agonizing, even in situations when "normal" people don't notice anything. A few years ago I started working at home a couple of days a week, joining my wife who has mostly always worked from home. From the first day, I was constantly bugged by a dog at a nearby house that would bark and bark and bark all day....I asked my wife about it and she said, "Dog? What dog?"

It could be that one of the rubber mounts that the compressor sits on has hardened and not isolating the compressor from the frame so it's giving you a buzz.....something like that?

Take the back off and look inside it while it's doing it. Maybe you can isolate the source. Don't electrocute yourself in the process.

Easy: buy the following: (1) tap set; (3) lengths of plastic tubing; (1) small canister CO2; (1) quarter keg of beer. Install the tap. Hook up the keg. Hook up the CO2. Draw a pint (or three) of Tasty Brew. Then...

Move the thing to the garage. Buy (1) refrigerator without annoying squeal. Install in kitchen.

Why pose true statements on GS?

I had been watching this thread with interest...had been expecting to see someone request a clip of the sound, then an ensuing discussion about the quality of the recording ("too much in the mid highs", etc.), followed by further discussion of the technique ("too much room, should have used ORTF instead of AB"), followed by, just maybe, some hazzarded diagnoses ("obviously a faulty frambulator, but I can't tell for sure because of the background coughing and HVAC").

There's only 2 repair tools in the universe that can help you now:
-If its supposed to move/vibrate, use WD-40
-If its supposed to be rigid/fixed, use duct/gaffer tape

In true GS spirit, I must say I try out Kroil oil over WD40, if something needs to get unstuck. Penetrating-Lubricating Oils

The problem lies not with your fridge but with a lack of room treatment in your kitchen. You need to add more room treatment in your kitchen because more room treatment is the cure for everything.

Seriously, if you need to adhere two things keep silicone adhesive in the back of your mind. It dries to a springy consistency and may help.

Or have a repair person come out and look at it to determine if the frambulator is faulty.
