I was wondering if you might be able to share with us your techniques for creating kick drums. I've been trying to learn how to create kick drums myself recently but haven't been able to get very good results.

I sampled a kick drum from a house track that I like for reference, trying to use a closed hi-hat for the top end, and then just fiddling with Ultrabeat's sine wave generator, adjusting the volume envelope for the whole thing along with adjusting the pitch envelope. I think it ends up somewhat close to the reference kick but just lacks that thick wood sounding thump somewhere in the mid-range (maybe 100-200hz).

try combining 2 or 3 kicks, or maybe even 4. If physically combining them in a sampler doesn't work, try playing the same midi file through them all simultaneously.
