Mic preamp plus the equalizer or just the equalizer?

It has a big red knob saying Mic gain and a switch for Mic/Line. Im going to guess its a mic pre too

Is the mic pre part the same as the 73 version?

Wow, going to have to save up for 2 of these. How long does stuff stay in stock for usually? I have been wanting his 19" Pultecs but they never come back in stock, is it usually when sold out then that's it forever?

If I remember right, you have or have had quite a few Neve clone and Neve-related designs. How do the AMLs compare for you? I was just reading an older thread with some criticisms of the AML components (relative to the Don Classics, which for instance use musterd mullard caps, while the AMLs don't).

I’ve sold my neves and am more than happy with these and my calrec 1061’s.

Have also sold my pulse pultec and use an AML pultec when the time calls

When the time comes I’ll grab a 1084.. and a few more EQ only modules to fill out my rack in that area as I only really Need the EQ not the preamps.

Pretty sure Don Classics is the pcb and case only. You have to source the individual components. So, it doesn't really include any capacitors. Maybe it makes recommendations for mustard mullard caps, but I haven't looked at the BOM recently. Anyways, the lack of components could be a plus or a minus depending on how knowledgeable the builder is about component brands, and how easy/hard it is to find said components. Peak covid it was near impossible to source a complete BOM for a lot of stuff.

If you really want certain capacitors you could source them and swap them in for the AML kit. My personal opinion is that it isn't worth the hassle. Unless you are buying crazy boutique capacitors, they should be no more than a couple bucks each, so it wouldn't increase the overall cost very much at all.

Honestly, as I get older the couple hours sourcing parts is time I would rather spend building or playing music. I just have less and less time anymore. Because of that, I really like CAPI and Hairball where I can get everything I need with the kit. I have heard good things about AML though, and really want to try them next when I have some spare time and money.

I never assume, LOL! Sometimes knobs/buttons are just decorations. I'm glad it's been confirmed though.

nope, you can also buy them fully assembled from David.

1073 and 1084 are basically the same... there are subtle value changes but nothing significant.

The 1073-500 is dealer only product... and more difficult to build despite being less complicated... it was designed a long time ago and the newer designs are more DIY friendly.

Since this is DIY (with option of assembled) it is significantly better value.

We are still waiting for parts for the ezP-1A.... some items are now over a year late.... it will return.... but cannot say when... that is the torment of Covid19

I want everyone to build their own gear, but understanding your own limitations is paramount.

Something like this is really for people who build regularly.... not really a starting point for a novice. If you want to get into DIY, there are plenty of simpler things... eg API style mic pres from Capi-gear.com

The key question that you need to ask is... " if I make a mistake, will I be able to find the fault without paying a professional".

Oh, thats a good point. I was thinking about the DIY side, that I don't think you can buy a complete DIY kit from Don Classics. I didn't think about pre-built. My bad.
