It's about 80% there maybe a little less.

This would not be the pre for drums at least for me, as its virtually colorless for a tube pre. I would go for the CA70 for drum duties, which I also much prefer the hardware vs the software.

Fair enough, thanks for your insight. It’s the dynamic response I wasn’t convinced by. I can imagine the EQ portion being nice on drums however!

After getting another demo of both, CA70 really sold me on what it does to the upper mids when pushed. It can be considered darker, creamy, richer or however one may describe it but it still remains clear. Quite unique in today’s plugin toolkit. I completely agree about drums. Just sounds more interesting.

I’ve been also reaching more Im trying to accomplish. Even better CA70 > AS 58.

We are blessed to have such an array of options to work with.

I agree CA70 can do the heavy lifting on drums, you can gain insane loudness with it while still retaining all the punch and integrity.
But VLC is also brilliant on drum bus, for a very different approach. It's more like a finishing touch, when you want to add some fairy dust on the transients. The EQ plays a big part in this though.

It can be pushed in INST mode pretty far and can add a lot of weight. (almost maxing out both inputs) But it will give in to the low end much much sooner than the CA70. However i love the texture it adds. Can't describe it, like a shiny brushed metal-ish thing.
Or it can be used much more sparingly pretty early in the chain, and then add more saturation with CA70 or whatever. It's only when you remove it, you'll notice most of the magic is gone.

So unfortunately they compliment each other. The Light vs. Dark side.

it's very authentic to my ears, it sounds a lot like valve gear I've used in the past, smooth and deadly!

the sweet spot, like most valve gear, for what I do is quite narrow, I have one or two settings that cover drums and bass. I don't use it so much on strings or pads, need to experiment though.

Sorry it has taken us a while to join the party here. Frankly, we have just been insanely busy cranking away at getting new plugins out. But now we are going to be on here consistently to please feel free to ask any questions, throw more suggestions at us, etc!

We are really stoked with how this plugin turned out and it's amazing to see how many of you guys are enjoying it. At Mixwave we are longtime producers and engineers who genuinely love and obsess over this stuff so that is the most meaningful possible result for us - You guys digging the plugins we make.

We use this thing on all kinds of sources. I saw some comments about how maybe it was too much on the mix bus, etc. Please remember that with both the VLC and the Coil, the wet/dry opens up a whole new world of possibilities! I use it constantly with these plugins.

A quick note on the iLok stuff you guys mentioned earlier in this thread - We opted to allow both dongle and cloud based authentication. As someone mentioned, we were indeed informed by Pace that machine-based is by far the least secure. So we figured that between dongle and cloud, this should make most people happy while protecting the IP of these products for not just ourselves but also the partners we make them with. We at Mixwave are all dongle users and always have been. I personally really don't mind it. A physical iLok dongle has been a part of my life for so long that I am used to it. But I know this is a personal use case thing so I hope also having cloud-based makes most people happy although I understand it can sometimes be annoying. Even still, I highly recommend trying out a dongle! I attached an AirTag to mine and life is good. YMMV, of course !

Thanks to your guys feedback so far. We are absolutely going to be extending the demo period. This is something we debated for a while so seeing your comments on here made us realize that we should be indeed doing 14 days. We also have a bunch of other features that we want to update all of our plugins with. Things like A/B, undo/redo, showing the input and output filters, etc. We are exploring what makes most sense and when we can get it all done.

Lastly - Sorry but we love the instrument cable graphic!! That one stays haha

Oh this is real nice to hear. A/B would be really good to have!

But for me the only real issue on a day by day basis is the range of the small clean Output knobs.

If you want to get the most out of the modeled gain interactions, i often boost quite a bit with the gain/input knobs. But certain levels the small output knob's range gets so extremely finicky, even with the fine-tune modifier.
I guess it's because the knob's range is not linear, and below 10 db or so, the resolution gets very broad.

Would be nice if you guys could look into making the gain staging a bit more user friendly.

I hear you and will definitely look into this! The input and output knobs are already on the list of things we are considering tweaking (while maintaining recall, of course). So I will take this back to the rest of the team and see what makes most sense. Thanks!

Again, congrats on an amazing plugin. It has remained the first plugin on all my channels for sculpting and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.
