Your original post quoted above, you are comparing your product and the tone feels very defensive, showing that
a. by specs your products are better
b. Neumann left out specs that you have shown.
c. You wrote this towards ionian: It's a shame that some people react the way you have here and use their wallet to determine how good something is rather than objective measurements and their ears but I understand why this happens.
ionian is not attacking your product, but citrusonic feels your product/brand offers more value.
d. This is a Neumann new product thread, and when another manufacturer claiming having a superior product by spec, in my opinion, it leaves a bad taste.
Hi Ribbonmicguy,
I appreciate you trying to explain your feelings so I can understand. Thanks for this.
Tone is hard to convey sometimes over forums/keyboard. I wasn't feeling defensive at all, sorry if it came across this way!
Anytime a new "transparent" preamp is launched, it will get us interested as this is a passion of ours. But we wouldn't and don't go through crashing product announcement threads of every one lol. A Gearslutz user mentioned our preamp as a comparison and thought it might be superior in terms of transparency whilst another Gearslutz user said that is unlikely to be true. I thought I could help shed light on this using objective specs and measurements - which is what's nice about transparent preamps, you can rely on THD and other specs to determine what is, objectively, the most transparent preamp.
Given this:
A) I never said our products are "better" - just that the Camden 500, objectively speaking, measures to be more transparent as one Gearslutz user correctly asserted. But more "transparent" is not necessarily better. After all, half the threads on Gearslutz are about how to get analogue saturation, which is not at all transparent lol
B) Quite frankly I'm very surprised that a critical preamp spec like EIN or THD is missed off - especially as these are most relevant specs to a preamp that is being touted as being "transparent". That was my only point. But incomplete spec sheets are a problem across our industry so it's disappointingly not that surprising, even if it is Neumann - a brand I value highly.
C) My point with this is we have specs that are published that can give us objective assessments on things like this. ionian contended that, based on price, it's unfathomable that Camden 500 could be cleaner than this Neumann due to the price. My point here is the objective specs show that this is the case, regardless of the cost. The price of something doesn't necessarily correlate to the performance and there are objective specs that you can use to understand this.
D) I am not the one who asserted this originally in this thread. A Gearslutz user with whom we have no relation to made this claim. All I was pointing out is that we can use specs to determine this, and if we do, the assertion is in fact correct.

PS: I do think the 500R8 is a very cool concept. I would be a customer if I ever get back to doing more recording at home or remote. I would also be a potential customer if you develop your headphone amp as a standalone unit.
All the best for your venture.
Thanks for the kind words. As this is a New Product Alert for another product/brand I won't engage in anything further but appreciate the kind words. Thanks
