This appeared on a FB group yesterday, "PYdynamic 500", USD$870. Claims to be based on the Pye 4060, but there is no technical info or back story or designer name detailed, I’m sure I read here somewhere that it is a no go zone, down the bottom of the too hard basket. Not aware of the history of DIY PYE builds etc but knowing Chad I'm going to assume he did phenomenal research and development behind the creation of this. Chad is a great guy and phenomenal builder. I own some SSL 502 EQ's he put together for me in the past. He's taken on some seemingly really difficult builds in the past and they all have turned out to be extremely impressive.

This seems like a great aggressive compressor that oddly doesn't exist in analog form today. So I commend him for his work and look forward to future builds and products from him.

Ive gotten interested in the Pye sound lately. There is one other unit being built, the Pompye.

Very cool! It's great to see more Aussie companies doing this sort of thing. Now if someone can just track down the old AWA console that was at Linear Recording Studios and copy the mic pre & EQ cassettes I'd be a very happy man!

Thanks for the interest in the compressor.
I've updated our website www.pynamic.com.au with more info on the units, that might answer some of your questions re: the challenges other builders talked about in producing a 500 series version.
I think the main barrier would have been money and time in designing a prototyping something like this. The boards alone must've cost me around $3000 across the 12 revisions or so. Shipping from China every time, desoldering to reuse components, re-designing on the software every time one component is out by a millimeter; its not a job most builders would consider viable.

In response to the tape hiding something, it is The custom wound transformer that we'd rather keep secret since it took forever to figure out Nothing burnt, the solder flux on the white PCB boards shows up a gross brown burnt colour, I think we will change to a different colour PCB for the next run to avoid flux colouration.

I wouldn't do a comparison with the PIE plugin, firstly there is a presumption that it sounds like the original, secondly the lack of oversampling in Waves plugins and unacceptable nyquist aliasing would render the exercise... redundant maybe??
The take away is that the compressor sounds insane, the demo shows that.

I have a Pye type compressor. It's similar to this but different, based on what I've heard with the demo video. I think I still prefer mine.

But this one sounds pretty cool.

Watched the YT demo. I don't know what an original PYE 4060 souneded like but he's certainly right that it shines on toms, that really caught my attention. I liked it on that style of accoustic guitar too.

The PomPye has existed for a few years already and is a clone of the Pye compressor.

This looks good and the price seems good - of course this being a mono unit means you'll need two for stereo.

That being said it's still not a bad price if you wanna get a pair just for the toms bus - which is a standard use for a pye compressor.

Does the limit button override the ratio knob?

Looks GREAT! The PYE has always been one of the most difficult "cult classic" vintage compressors to recreate from a technical standpoint; PWM topology is a PITA (!!!!) - hence why there are only a couple options (2 now that this has been released!) and to design it for 500-series format was a genius/daring idea..

I LOVE IT! It sounds FANTASTIC from the demo video - I'd love to get ahold of one of these for testing purposes. Back in the day, the only hardware option was the AC SOUND rack unit which did sound and perform well (I owned one for a few years and was a big fan of Abe before the complexity and stress of building his PYE's basically ruined him). Seems your unit actually sounds true to the original, sonically.

I thought it sounded not bad. The drum sound in their example isn't eq'd very well. It sounds woofy on my system, and I'm not really sure how much I liked it in the 100ms position, which is important.

I have an AC Sound copy that I built many years ago with true bypass relays. It's in the shop right now getting a setup. But when I listen to the AC sound unit on Youtube, I think I prefer it's sound. It sounds more 'together' for lack of better words...and more punchy in the 100ms position. The sustain in the release seems a bit better also; the transition between transients. I didn't find the AC Sound unit that hard to build, but you have to be accurate when installing the components. You also need to be able to set the trimmers correctly and set the oscillator freq.

The PYE stuff is a VERY difficult nut to crack.

Tricky and not cheap. Different elements plays a vital role to get the same (amazing) sound.

Nobody has yet done the right, as the original, output stage.. at least done the same (right) way.
not even POM (afaik) has the exact output stage as the originals.. (despite that his unit sounds great of course!).

Cool that somebody did a 500 series unit..
would love to test one at some point, just out of curiosity..
Is not the same as the original but might be a cool piece, nonetheless

Would love to hear how this sounds next to a Pompye.

I like it a lot, But I’m not buying any audio hardware that doesn’t include parallel compression mix knobs at this point.

I know there are ways to add it with daw setup and extra hardware, but I like it on my device. It’s a simple addition that opens up so many more sounds and possibilities. Just a thought.

As a coupla counterpoints to consider, another knob on a piece of 500 series gear can often mean cramped faceplates and a less robust user experience. A hw mix knob is also typically not automatable, which limits the possibilities when mixing; I'd rather have a couple faders for dry and wet that I can balance and rebalance for different sections of the song.

They seem to be reluctant to do comparisons with anything, I’m not sure how they can say it sounds like the real thing without comparing, they’re even reluctant to compare to Waves version, despite that being used by some top mixers, hmm, that’s a deal breaker to me. Their demo isn’t winning any fans as far as I’m concerned either.

Yeah Distressors and all those other shitty hardware comps without mix knobs. How has anyone ever made anything sound good with them?
