I have both here, an Emax I and an Emulator II. They both definitely different in sound. Both do delta companding to 8 Bit, so the "real" dynamic is greater and result in sonething like 12 to 14 Bit. The EII can only sample at 27,777 kHz, while the Emax has several sample-rates to choose from. EII can only transpose +/- 12 semitones, so you must have three samples to play the whole 5 octaves. Emax can, depending on the samplerate transpose over a wider range. Lower transpositions (>-12)of Emax result in audible artifacts, that sound lovely 80s. It defenitely has a larger sound-spectrum then the EII. Filters are also different, EII filters do sound in general a little fatter then the Emax ones. But still the Emax filters are analogue with resonance and do sound a lot better (more analouge) then the Emax II Filters. Further more the Emax has Stereo-Panning and a Chorus. EII looks quite nice, but also the Emax has optical charme. Emax is defenitely the more robust device. I would not use the EII on stage, I even think about before moving it. Emax is rock solid built.
From pragmatic view the Emax is the better Sampler over all. EII has more charme, because it was used by the Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode and many others. That's charme against a more flexible and robust device.
BTW: TAL-Sampler has the EII Sound, but with a full range transposition!!!
Just for my 2c ... :-)
