Any updates to this? Thinking of interfacing Burl to RME PCIe. I can’t have much latency - In regards to TRACKING

Clocking, Dante, and all this other bull still seems complicated after so many years

I find monitoring with a computer to be garbage to begin with. There are a few different non dante setups that will allow real monitoring because the sound card has a mixer and the monitoring is not using DAW software.

I suggest using a dante mixer for the monitoring.

RME DigiFace Ravena, for example? Would this get me lighting fast latency and no BS clocking in/out a mother station, as well as in/out something like a Trinnov on the output side of things, from tracking, outboard (2buss) processing, monitoring with Trinnov etc?

I don’t need a huge channel count at all, but I want to be able to go with one system and stick to it… tracking latency taking priority

I run an 80x80 Burl Mothership system with 3x chassis all over Dante. It is rock solid and performs flawlessly. I use it both with an MTRX and Dante cards for interfacing with HDX2 and alternatively to a Focusrite RedNet PCIe card for Coreaudio and Logic Pro. Dante works extremely well once you configure and route it properly. I love it and the extra network latency is a non issue at all, sub 1ms with a properly configured network.

For a small channel count, AES seems like the best choice for me because it’s tangible to me. I can wrap my mind around it. But that doesn’t say anything about whether it’s “better” or worse than Dante or any other protocol in terms of things like latency or clocking an entire system - several devices but still small channel count. If you’re running AES that means you’re running BNC, which means you choose the master clock and slave everything to it manually.

Conversely, I’m reading in another thread that once you get Dante setup, the clocking is automatically choosing through the inter workings being that Dante figures out the best clocking source and slaves the other devices automagically.

More questions and confusion, and it’s a big deal when you want to map out several devices that you plan on using

the Digiface Ravena will work nicely. Even though I don't like usb as a interface connection, but at least a power hub can be modified or an isolated power hub will fix the power shortcomings with USB.

You get really low latency with Dante or AES 67. Most Dante equipment is AES 67 compliant.

For something like a tracking booth with Dante, Focusrite RedNet AM2 would work nicely for the headphones while tracking with the Burl.

Latency with dante only really occurs when you use a standard Ethernet connection. The main reason why is the computer network interface is integrated into the system's networking stack and can't be unbind from the stack. Hence that is why they had to come up with a special networking card that does not incorporate itself onto the computers, ip networking stack.

Dante really removes the need for a global clock because the way it uses networking by framing data. Yes there is synchronization clock, but its not the same thing.

You had to clock a raw digital signal, or clock off a synchronization pulse from the raw digital.

The difference between network digital protocols and raw digital is network digital is formatted data + clock information and the raw data formats is the raw data that has to be clocked either by a local PLL circuit or remote clocking input.

Okay, we are getting somewhere. If I’m tracking a vocalist in another room I can really see where this would be handy with a que mix.

POE, so just one cable AND you can use it as a switch for neighboring device?

In contrast, if you used USB, you’d have to run everything to your computers motherboard and deal with drivers and compatibility issues.

My signal flow would look something like Guitar>DI>PRE>BURL ADC> Straight into computer to capture DI keeping the file raw whilst simultaneously processing my guitar chain to monitor what it would sound like with VST’s.

I was able to pull this off with a Universal Audio Apollo twin, but was a bit un-inspired with the tone and limitations - and there are so many with UA stuff.

Dante is expandable media format and interconnections don't have distance issues.
USB, you are limited to what the device can do.

The real requirement is setting up separate networking with a wifi router and switches landed in rooms.

With switches, you have to make sure the POE switch port is 1GB. Because the common poe switch is 10/100 for ip cameras. I've used different switches, even the Yamaha ones. But a good un-managed switch works just as good. I use simple TP-link switches. the only difference between setting up a dante vs. a home network, is you configure the router's address at the top of the network segment ( like router address at 192.168.100.254, dhcp pool: 192.168.100.100-200) So the first 100 addresses you can static while the 100 dhcp addresses will be auto assigned when a dante device adds a control or audio stream to/from it.
