I just want to open the plugin with my mouse and then tweak the dials, not take over my whole workflow. Am I misunderstanding how this thing works, or can I use it this way?
As Myroks says, you can use the Console 1 hardware without having the On-Screen Display open. There are LEDs around each knob that show the current settings for the selected track. In a future upgrade, we will make it possible to only have the On-Screen Display's meter bridge visible. Then you'd see all Console 1 track levels and names, but you could have your DAW window open above the meter bridge.

I'd love to see a proper video review of this with demonstration.
Well, it's not a review, but at least a demonstration:

It's not an uncommon comment. I can only urge you to try the Console 1 for yourself to see if it really is that big a problem as you imagine. I mean, you set equalizer gain and a lot of other functions with a knobโso why is the channel volume really that different?
There are a few reasons we didn't put in a fader. First, costโa good motorized fader would have bumped up the price at least $100. They're really insanely expensive if you want something good (and we're not going to put something bad in anything we do). The next issue was real estate. We wanted to keep the unit's width below 19" so it could be rack mounted in the future. Adding a fader would eat up a lot of space on the front panel, so we'd either have to make it more crammed or take away functions that are there now. That didn't seem worth it. And finally, since Console 1 is not a DAW controller in any sense, we thought it would be a bit confusing to users to have a physical fader that didn't control the DAW fader.

Actually, no. As a few examples, you don't get channel selection from the hardware and you don't get a dedicated hardware with each and every function screen printed on the hardware. You don't get the visual control Console 1's On-Screen Display offers in a single window. While this may sound as small details, they all contribute to making Console 1 a unity. Console 1 is a mixer, and it offers a workflow that is just way above a plug-in plus a controller.
The solution you suggest won't even save you money. Price wise, if we were to make a separate plug-in including the SSL EQ, compressor, gate, high and low cut, channel harmonics/distortion plus our own Transient Shaper, that plug-in would probably be around $600 by itself. (As a comparison, let's say you bought UAD SSL 4000 and SPL Transient Designer, plus a Waves NLS. This is quite comparable to what you get with Console 1, and that combo would set you back $747).
The hardware is built in Sweden and each unit is quality controlled by us at the Softube HQ. The knobs are solid and not the cheap, flimsy kind. The encoders are the highest quality and won't crap out the day after the warranty expired. There are no controllers like that for the $150 you mention.
Instead, for $1000, you get a top quality hardware/software mixer, that you just plug in. Then you can spend your time mixing music instead of setting up your own plug-in plus controller system. That seems to be just what a lot of people find a terrific deal, because our biggest problem now is keeping up with the demand.
Cheers,
Henrik
