If you don't want to bounce around between Session and Arrangement, commit to a single workflow. Session does nothing Arrangement can't do, and Arrangement is a bit underdeveloped compared to other "traditional" DAWs in that regard - but for me it's worth it because of the better UI.

Well any DAW will do what you want. That's bread and butter stuff. By 'sequence', I assume you mean taking your audio, adding effects, maybe a little editing and mixing, bounce to stereo?

Take your pick, really. If you're already on Live but you just want that straight up arrangement multi-track window, try Reaper since it won't cost you much. I use Cubase/PT but Reaper is pretty straighforward.

If you're talking about lining up your mixed songs and mastering then yeah, you can do that in a mastering specific program like Wavelab/Wavelab essential or make due in the DAWs mentioned above along with Samplitude, Sonar, or Studio One.

You have created three threads all over the place about a sequencing program. Sequencing refers to midi as in back in the day early 90s a ''pure sequencing program'' would be something like notator for atari. That can't do audio. What you want is a pure mixdown program.

So basically your choices are these:

Pro tools.
Comes with a whole variety of fx bundled some of which are quite useful and is a industry standard mix platform. This would be ideal now that protools added automatic delay compensation. Get that if your computer can handle it. If you are not happy with live this is the exact opposite.

Cubase on the Pc. Is the PC mix platform you produce and mix in there quite powerful and if you do not need the fancy features and already have fx instruments you can get cubase studio for 100 bux.

Sell the PC and get a Mac and go logic.

The rest of the stuff you are mentioning...

Acid in 2011? I mean each to their own...
Wavelab is a two track program for finished mixes (not what you want)
Propellerheads record and the Harrison mix-bus do not support vst effects.

So back to the original three options in the sequence I put them in. No pun intended.

Got to echo above, on PC, the only real option is Cubase.
Maybe as a cheap alternative, you could look at Reaper.

ProTools isn't really an option due to the VST aspect.



If you were on Mac, then I'd would be looking at Logic.

Of course, we've all got opinions, but it's down to YOUR personal taste - they all have both +ve & -ve attributes. It's down to which of these floats yoru boat or you can tolerate!!!

You may want to look into Renoise (Renoise - About Renoise). I use that for pure sequencing.. dead-on control type sequencer. It obviously supports VST and AU. Allthough not the traditional piano roll, once you get the hang of it you will absolutely love it. From there I bounce everything out in Logic for mixing and further track building. Sometimes I even do all arrangements in Logic, and just use Renoise as a "plugin" via Rewire; sequence all stems in Renoise and bounce directly out as audio in Logic. This is also, by the way, a real fun way to work because you work in two completely different environments towards the same goal.

Isn't this what Acid was designed to do, from the ground up? I don't know about the VSTs or UAD support, but when I did use it, it was all about constructing music from libraries, with some recording capabilities for making your own libraries.

Logic doesn't use VSTs either

And they always add new features, new instruments, new GUI, new everything...how hard is to fix the damn window resize? The BeatDesigner plug takes over my 27" screen!!!

No one makes a "pure sequencer" that's also good anymore, forget it. Cubase has by far the best sequencer. Don't want to use its other features? Don't. Use it purely as a sequencer. Works perfectly.

You can easily try REAPER, and if your plugins aren't supported properly the devs are ussually very quick to fix those types of issues.

thanks for the input guys. i guess i should have been more clear as to what i wanted. the harrison mix bus looks a lot like what i am wanting (but no vst support or PC support) - If ableton just had the vertical mixing console at the bottom instead of just the arrangement it would be fine. going to just try and get a korg nanokontrol and link my volume and panpots to it and try it out in arrangement view. cubase looks very interested but i've spent a long time learning ableton and don't really want to learn a new DAW.

Reaper looks interesting too. Very straight forward and not bloated with crap. Definately going to at least give it a try.

wondering if i just need to get an mpc40 or something so i can control clips and volume levels in a more "natural" way while using arrangement view. that's what bothers me the most about live. it's hard to do more than arrangement and drawing automation in arrangement view. i know you might think im lazy because i can always hit tab, but i'd like everything in front of me when im mixing and arranging. i don't want to have to tab back to change volume or a panpot. a nanokontrol looks to be interesting as well. perhaps a piece of midi kit is the answer and not another software program

Personally use Renoise for the whole arrangement / fx of the tune after recording hardware to get the source sounds, later put in logitech / wavelab / soundforge for further editing/creative FX if needed. I like Renoise as it's set-up how some hardware sequences are, so if you like an hardware set-up in terms of being created with your music you should like it (It's a Tracker) It's very good for advanced editing also.
