So... I guess I need to finally bite the bullet and get a VST wrapper so I can run some VST plugs in PT8 on the Mac. I'm curious about what you guys recommend in order to do this.

I recommend don't do it. Horrible problems with FXPansion VST wrapped plugs on this end. Ugly stuff.

that's because fxpansion have a classic history of reeasing wrappers (and other products) and abandoning them and refusing to keep them up to date. Avoid the wrapper like the plague.


Buy Kore 2, load an rtas of it, and use your vst instruments in that. 100 x better

probably cause 1 person bought it and everyone else torrented it!

I was really just wanting to use the Major Tom comp. I heard it used, and really liked it. Hmmm.

I bought the wrapper a looong time ago, and it works perfectly. The UI has some usability issues, but the wrapper itself works just fine. I use tons of VST plugs in PT8 and have had no problems at all...
I'm running Windows 7 thought... not sure if there are other issues present in the Mac version...

I have no problems either using the fxpansion wrapper in PT8. It also depends on the plugin whether it was optimized to work with the wrapper or not. I'm not saying that this wrapper is bullet-proof but all the uad plugs and others like the major tom are working flawlessly in my system.

BTW, I'm on 10.5.8 so it's all 32bits.

Yeah, no problems here on PTMP 8 and Win7-64. Maybe the issues are a Mac thing?

well it even says on the product page vst 2.4 plugins are not supported.

All mac intel vst plugins are 2.4 or above.

Yeah, I know. Heard great things about the wrapper. That's why I bought it. But the tech support is virtually non existant, (3 weeks to even acknowlege I sent an email for support) and certain plugs are buggy as hell when wrapped. I'd rather live without any plug than deal with crashes, kernel panics, instability and general glitchiness.

I can totally understand you there... I'd do the same! Sorry to hear about your experiences with it... I've never tried contacting Fxpansion before, so I wouldn't know... but the company seems to be... very quite. Dunno wassup with them (I also own BFD2).

I purchased it a few years back and it's been working fine for me almost to date.
It ran fine in 10.5.8 and though I've just upgraded to Snow Leopard 3 weeks ago
I've yet to put it through it's paces. I don't expect any problems though.

I will say that some freebie VST's out there you may find have issues
and a lot of it comes down to the plugin developer. a crap VST is going
to run crappy wrapped as RTAS. I've had the wrapper crash on me
but found that by removing a crap VST it worked fine afterwards.

On the flip side of that, I can remember reports of NI's Battery actually performing
better as a wrapped VST than it's RTAS version for some people.

I don't think FX has abandoned it, it's just that the RTAS format hasn't
had any serious changes to date. That could change after Avid announces
the next major Pro Tools release.(PT 9 ?)

Bought it yesterday, and am loving it so far. I'm using .dll plugins too; Syntax (instruments from M-Audio Session) mainly. It works like a charm.

Really pricey though. I wish I could've found a working torrent for it. Never torrented before, but damn, $100?
