Hi everyone! I just purchased the ULN-8 and am very happy with it. I just have a slightly OT question.

How do I utilize the Balanced sends 1-8?

I have an API 2500 and I would like to sum my mix in logic 9 output into an API 2500 then back in the ULN-8 input but since i'm using ULN-8 internal preamps, I cannot insert the API2500 stereo compressor after the ULN-8 preamps in the signal chain. Do I need preamp gain after the ULN-8 output in order to have sufficient gain for the API 2500?

I'm really confused and have tried searching for answers but couldn't.

If I understand correctly, you want to send your master mix to your compressor, then back to the ULN-8?

If this is the case, you can create a DAW 1-2 stereo insert bus on the MIO mixer, send that mix out of 2 of your analog outputs on the ULN-8. send those outputs to your compressor, return the stereo feed back to two inputs on your ULN-8 and use the "inst" input on a stereo bus on the ULN-8 and you're set!

The Mic S/R option is only for using outboard great while recording on Mic I believe, although I could be wrong in this. (IE: you want to use an external PRE, or compressor while recording)

Well, I took a leap off of the cliff. Sold some outboard stuff that has been more or less dead weight on my rental company card, flipped some personal stuff, pooled resources from several places and bought 2 ULN8's to go along with my ULN 2 for a remote rig I'm putting together. Lighpiping 6 channels of API 512c's and 2 channels Neve 1073 DPA with Little Labs Redcloud attenuation via RME ADI8 DS for a 30 track rig I never dreamed of a few years ago. Ordered a Radial OX8-J for an 8 channel split with 16 more channels on the way when my checkbook recovers!

Using the ULN 2 along with a ULN 8 for the Carlo Aonzo and Elena Buttiero concert at Synod Hall in Pittsburgh Saturday night. I'll be assisting a Duquesne Prof. and swell guy. I'm really looking forward to hearing the results.

The MIO console and Record Panel look pretty straight forward. I hope it is because I have about 5 days to get it up and running for the rehearsal. Yikes!

I'd like to buy two of these units, but money's tight... so If I just bought one, could I connect my AD16-x's AES outs to the ULN-8 AES in's and have 8 more channels at 96khz ? I kinda like this option because it would give me 8 clean pre's of the ULN-8, and then give me the choice of 8 other pre's connected to the apogee. (also.. which clock you think would be best to use ?? ) Thanks for any advice !!

Yes -- this will work fine. One thing to note is that there have been folks who have tried to use a cross-over cable between the Apogee and the ULN-8 and have encountered some problems with wiring. While a crossover cable should not be an issue (and we have used DB-25 <-> DB-25 crossovers between the ULN-8 and PTHD 192 boxes), I would recommend getting a break out cable for the Apogee and a breakout for the ULN-8 and connecting XLR to XLR to avoid that possible issue.

Feel free to experiment with clock and report back...

i've just bought a 2882 2d after a lot of reading, listening, and interviewing. it't the perfect unit for the stuff i'm doing now which runs the gamut from classical minimal mic recording to mixing and arranging dub-type stuff to short films.

the remaining question i have is: "why is being phase coherent to DC good?" what does it mean? what are it's implications on the audio?

The lack of phase shift preserves time alignment and waveshape within the signal. While it is a relatively small effect, the perception appears to be that the low and mid bass is more solid and realistic.

Hi guys, I'm a long-time lurker here (and elsewhere) - hello!

There's been lots written about the conversion in the MH ULN-8, but not much comment on the pres that I've seen. I do classical location recording and would like to know how they stack up against the good and the great.

I currently use Millenia, Davs and Buzz MA2.2. I've previously used the Prism Orpheus built in pres which I wasn't particularly in love with. I mostly record with DPA omnis.

I'd love someone to tell me that these pres are in the same league for the chance to put 3U into a new 1U (yep, it's all about size ). I'm not a big fan of field recorders as I like to play with DSP while tracking alot, so getting my laptop based system down in size is an ongoing quest!

I love my Millennias but haven't much touched them since acquiring my ULN-8s. And I sold one of my quads to help with another ULN-8 purchase. Yes, I'd say the ULN-8s are in the same league as Millennia, but only your ears can tell you.

When I reviewed the ULN-8 for a Swedish magazine I compared it both to HV-3Ds and RME Micstasy. I found it better than RME and maybe slightly different from millennia.

As for you, since size was an important factor for me, I decided to go with the ULN-8 and I'm now contemplating buying another. It's a powerful, well-sounding platform with expandability.
