I´m running Pro Tools HD 9.0.6 on OSX 10.6.8 on a Mac Pro 2 x 2.66 Quad-Core Intel Xeon. This is a very stable system.

The only reason I am thinking about updating my OSX is, there are a few new plug-ins I want, but they require OSX 10.7.

On the Avid Support side I can read that PT HD 9.0.6 is supported with OSX 10.7.4. I will probably update, but it would be nice to find someone with a similar set up who did this and can tell me about his/her experience.

In my experience, don't do it. Just went through this a few weeks ago for the same reason – wanted a plugin (Kontakt latest version) that required Lion.

Basically, Digi's drivers and Lion were a messy combo. Strange behavior with Pro Tools such as errors launching and the occasional random crash.

Under Lion 10.7.4, iTunes and Safari audio stopped working through my Digi interface. Audio Midi Setup froze on launch. Third party apps that require MIDI did not work standalone unless Pro Tools was running first. All of these worked perfect under 10.6.8. There were workarounds to get some of these working, but not worth the trouble.

Simply updating to Lion from SL was better than a fresh install of Lion… Still not perfect however, and I happily went back to 10.6.8 with a fresh install that cleanup my HD and made it snappier like new. That was the only positive, but I do regret the loss of time. Thankfully, I planned carefully to revert back to SL in case Lion didn't pan out.

My solution to the plugin concern was to use my Macbook Pro which already had Lion installed and run the latest version of Kontakt on that, while my main system stayed on the solid 10.6.8/PT9.0.5.

Very helpful answer Bruno, thank you. That´s probably the route I´ll go too. I heard rumors before that Lion is not that good.
I probably get an external computer and feed PT via VEPro V maybe, I´m using that anyway.

No problem. VEPro 5 is even cleaner than what I'm doing for now with OSX's built-in networking for MIDI and bringing the audio back via a second interface.

I run a 2006 Mac Pro running OS 10.6.8, Pro Tools 9.0.6 and a Tascam DM3200 running 1.70 and I don't have any problems. Originally, I upgraded my Mac Pro to Snow Leopard 10.6.3 and eventually upgraded to 10.6.8. With Pro Tools I started with M-Powered System 7, which I updated to Pro Tools 9.03 I eventually updated Pro Tools to 9.0.6 and I have been running this system for the last 18 years. 4 weeks ago my OS harddrive "Crashed & Burned" and I bought a new 2T Seagate Hard Drive and I re-installed all the software into my 2006 Mac Pro and it is up and running again. If you have issues reinstall the Mac OS update 10.6.8 and the Pro Tools update 9.0.6. I usually run the 10.6.8 and 9.0.6 updates once every 2 months to keep the programs running clean and more efficiently. I hope this helps.
