Well in this case it will be an easy decision. The Intel Xeon w9-3595X has 60 Cores and the same single thread rating as the AMD Threadripper Pro chips.

I dont know but i assume 60 cores and 120 threads will be enough for the next 5-10 years.

I'm a life time Intel user and i'm not looking to go with AMD unless i can't get what i want/need from intel.

Intel overall still seems to be the better platform and also still has lower latencies.

I don't care if i have to pay more for the same performance.

It's not just the CPU. But also the ability to have more resources for upgrades. More memory slots with more memory channels thus way faster memory which favors e.g. sample libraries and video editting.
With multiple gen 5 PCI-e slots you can add solid state drive solutions if you need ridiculous speeds.
In my case multiple PCI-e audio interfaces for low latency audio.

In the mean time ARM CPU's will continue to increase their market share and it will grow much faster when bigger numbers cause cheaper CPU's. Laptops and servers will be first because there the power/performance ratio counts bigtime. In 5-10 years the playing field for CPU's will have been drastically changed.

The moment you buy such a high-end system you can write it off in 5 years. After that it still may have some value but at best that will be 1/4th of the original price if you're lucky. It's either an investment or a luxury thing.

I've used a 13th gen Intel CPU that took me a few months to get stable (enough) and may go bust at any time because of possible damaged hardware.
Intel dropped the ball on that big time and they kept their mouths shut for a very long time until they were confronted with the issues. For those digressions I've decided that AMD will be my next upgrade. As far as speed and reliance I guess it depends per application you use it for. But speeds isn't my primary goal. More like a stable somewhat future proof platform that won't breakdown any time soon. And hopefully the silicon lottery will have better odds for high-end setups.

If you wanna use a server CPU for your workstation you must have a heck of a studio.

I've tried out the half dozen Sapphire Rapids boards we've had in stock and all of them without exception had a DPC spike I couldn't shake, it's why we've never offered the platform. I've not revisited in about 4 or 5 months so things might have changed or you might get lucky with an alternate board, but don't be surprised if it glitches on you.

Unfortunately they did not respond yet but it says on the site that response time for a quote is 3-5 business days. I'm not sure if they will respond/sell to me (very small business, only looking to buy 1 computer) at all though.

Supermicro usually responds, even to individuals.

But if you asked them anything about latency they will reply but not answer.

I didn't, Asus, Gigabyte and AsRock is all I could get my hands on, so that could be worth a look over.

Not likely. With a TDP of 350W you may have spikes of max twice the amount that the condensors in the PSU should be able to handle.

The thing is PSU's though is that they can deteriorate depending on their certification in their lifespan. If a 800W deteriorates 20% and dips under the total needed power the system gets unstable and hardware may get damaged.

I'm always over dimensioning my PSU's because of that. But there shouldn't be no need to go totally overboard. Still if you buy a beefy system it makes sense to get a platinum or gold PSU as well that will handle everything accordingly during the expected lifespan.

There is no point applying conventional logic to the current Xeon W790 Platform , what I was hinting at is what was directly experienced and required to keep the systems up , i.e, you needed massive overhead in the PSU's over and above what the systems were using at peak.

There was no logic to it, minimum recommended PSU was 1600W, even for 12 Core CPU's, systems wouldn't run with anything under 1200W.

You obviously missed the extensive reports myself and Pete posted covering the whole Xeon 2400/3400 / W790 fiasco.

Ship has sailed, and pointless revisiting because the platform was pretty much abandoned by Intel and is essentially DOA for DAW usage, IMO.

The DAWbench saturation test did show some potential in Reaper, but there is no guarantee any of the other DAW's would have any idea how to arbitrate to the higher core counts. Throw in some bussing / group session environments and all bets are off.

I can confirm through learning the hard way, that a 1200W PSU with nothing more than a 350W CPU and 200W GPU somehow required a 1500W PSU to not fall over underload.

Vin has a better memory regarding that headache than I do apparently, I've probably blocked out the trauma of banging my head against the wall for a few days.

I don't blame you blocking out that mess, wipe and flush is the better option.

Platform is a dead end, the 2500/3500's haven't even been released into the local OE channel. I gave up chasing ghosts and deleted the listings, total waste of time IMO !

For consumer systems my assumptions I consider them a rule of thumb situation.
So this case is the exemption to the rule.

Seems like an example of bad engineering of Intel. How can a 350W CPU suck up that much juice or become unstable when it can't.
Typically another example of Intel engineering adopting the requirements to a badly designed product.
That shouldn't only be in the manual but also on the box of the motherboard and CPU.

The Xeon/TR platform always had a bad price/performance ratio and thus make it unattractive for any application.
Although the AI surge maybe a positive use-case for this platform.

Little update.
Various websites reported that next generation Threadripper Pro CPU's were spotted in shipping manifests.
Most likely they are engineering samples for evaluation and certification.
The manifest mentions SP6 socket which is pin compatible with sTR5 but not electrical compatible. To me it's unclear how that will work out. If there will be forward compatibility with existing mobos or a new mobo will be introduced. The current amount of available mobos are very limited and any newcomer would a good thing. It also shows that it's an incredible niche market for these workstation machines.
Anyway, it will take a good while until these new products will be available in the shops.

and by then the new 24 or 32 core AM6 desktop CPU might be out

SP* is the EPYC socket. So maybe they move to a common socket for TR and EPYC.

Or somebody mixed them up.

Who knows.

As for me, the reason isn't so much the cores. I don't to movie scores with a gazillion tracks. It's more about the pci-e lanes and the possible expansions you can add later.

There have been more sightings of 'Shimada peak' CPU shipping manifests.
The speculation is that the announcement will be made during Computex which is May 20-23.
Maybe at the same time the new Intel CEO will make some announcements as well.
Computex itself seems to be all about AI and the hardware needed for that.
