I basically just started loading my most recent projects (I think I went through my last 10 or so sessions) and only installing the plugins/instruments that came up as missing.

Really thinned my plugin folders significantly.

Sure as one goes back you'll notice more items that are missing but then you can make individual decisions based on what is important or has maybe been superseded by something better/newer/shinier.

It's actually not as bad as you might think!

Just ordered the base level M4 Mini. It won’t be my main PC, but it’ll be always on with a USB-C external SSD-disk attached.

How can I access that disk remotely? Especially with a phone? I’d like to have all my photos available all the time, also some mp3s from the past.

Plugin wise I’m good, but I guess I can’t install my Waves plugs because I’m not WUP’ed.. But I can live with that.

Some installers still need Rosetta, even if the plugins are universal. There is no downside on having Rosetta installed. The Pluginfo app is an excellent way to check all your plugins.

What you mean is that the new OS requires a version you don't have? Otherwise, obviously you can install…

Technically, if someone had WUP at release date of Waves 15 (June 2024) and upgraded, then the WUP ran out in september say, obviously Waves 15 is still good for installing in a new machine.

Right. I'm on v14, so will have to factor in an upgrade when moving to the next OS. I use much less Waves these days, but I like those I do use.

It's been a long time but I was able to access network shares on my Android phone a decade ago, so I'm sure it's still possible. This was Windows though, I don't know if Apple land makes it harder or forces you to use an iPhone or anything.

WOO WOO I got my new Mini on Wednesday afternoon. I have basically set it up, it's running and connected to the web and my home network. I had to order some cables, which will be here on Friday, to be able to connect all my external drives, etc. I planning to install all my applications, plugins, etc over the weekend fresh. however, I would like to use Migration Assistant to move just the settings and data to my new machine. are there any "gotchas" about doing that? and should I do that BEFORE or AFTER I install the new applications?

I really would not bother. Build it fresh then you know exactly how it is being set up. Yes its a pain to re-install libraries etc but what I do is put the old Mac on the network and grab anything I need manually. Its tempting to use migration assistant but not everything it migrates will probably work 100% anyway. When I did this I was up and running really quickly. Partly because the new Mac is so fast. Opportunity to streamline as you do this.

All libraries are on separate drive. I just want to get my settings and data. No applications will be installed.

Well congrats and good luck with the migration. Monterey to to MacOSX 11.x is a big jump.

I've got a OWC thunderbolt hub, and plugging it in activated my screen and keyb+mouse.

Feels snappy and good, updating to 15.4.1 right now.

Modern PC's:

slowly getting things setup. reinstalling all the software is only a part of the process. it's all the settings, passwords, updating to latest versions and of course finding all the presets. I also had to wait till I got the machine to make sure what exact cables I needed to get things setup the way I wanted.

I'm 2 daze in. it will likely take another 2-3. shall we say "it's a process".

Firstly you need a password manager! Especially now that we really need to be using much more complex passwords.

And I just copied over my entire folder (whether I reinstalled the plugin or not) from my user library: User/Library/Audio/Presets

And I did the same thing for each DAW (which was slightly more time-consuming, trying to find where their home folders were) but, for instance, both Pro Tools and LPX opened up without issue including templates and channel presets I stored within each DAW.

Not sure what you're upgrading from but man tansfering from SSD to SSD is a dream. Loading old sessions from spinners is like "time for a coffee" all over again!

Really loving my M4 Mac Mini, this is my third day.

Everything seems to be working just fine, fast and snappy. Reaper and Audient iD44 working good!
