Thanks jwh1192, I've successfully recorded audio from a YouTube clip via the freeware Audacity.
I'd like to preserve the format of the audio in the YouTube clip in order to maximise fidelity by minimising transcoding. I'm unsure how to ascertain the audio format of the YT clip however.
Here's some info from YouTube Help Centre > Encoding Specifications for Music Videos :
Audio Profile
Codec - FLAC, Linear PCM.
Sample rate - 44.1kHz recommended. Higher sample rates are accepted but not required (for example, 48kHz or 96kHz).
Bit depth - 24-bit recommended, 16-bit acceptable.
Channels - 2 (stereo).
Although it is not recommended, YouTube accepts compressed audio. YouTube transcodes from the delivered format; audio quality is much better when transcoded from a lossless format compared to re-compressing a lossy audio format.
If you must deliver compressed audio, use these specifications:
Codec: AAC-LC
Sample Rate: 44.1Khz
Bit Rate: 320kbps or higher for 2 channels (higher is always better; 256 kbps acceptable)
Channels: 2 (stereo)

The above guideline is presumably referring to the format of the audio that the clip is delivered to YT in, NOT the format that YT transcodes it to prior to posting.
With the video in question onscreen, clicking on "settings", then "quality", the setting is shown as "auto (720p)". There are 5 other options available, ranging from 144p to 720p.
Does anyone know how I can verify the audio format of the YT video?
