I too enjoy a nice political bonfire but not in the studio where we keep all these expensive toys...
To move this convo back on track, is the OP suggesting that:
1. Native processing is going to make DSP obsolete?
2. Other company's are going to give DSP in UAD a run for their money?
On point
#1 ...I think we are still a ways off from absolute burial of DSP due total native code dominance, BUT...I can remember the days not to far removed when you could not even track at ALL with a native plugin in the signal chain...now-a-days the tech industry has fine tuned these systems and reached new (near microwave) speeds in processors we are close to the edge of Moores law down to the atomic level on die sizes for chip makers...I actually think it might go the other way here...meaning some tech company is going to pick up the DSP process and improve it bunches and bunches...
The SHARC processor that UAD and other use (Xilinx I think) is actually pretty long in tooth...I know I found one in my Damage Control Glass Nexus...(and of course UAD now makes pedals as well)...but it seems technology follows this curve where they advance the main components as far as they can then begin to advance the peripheral stuff and busses etc...anyone remember the hot mess of "This technology will end USB" that FireWire was? Then they released FW 800 and now we...don't use Fire wire hardly at all...because USB is back in town on the C-bus...
As far as point
#2 ...Apogee and Antelope and Metric Halo and others have all jumped into the "DSP onboard" or "dual path" or "AFX2DAW" or some other new DSP claim to fame and so far not one of these companies has avoided the pitfalls UAD went through 20 something years ago over the mountains and far away.
Apogee's dual path hit the ground and immediately crumbled on impact...Antelope finally got AFX2DAW to work on Apple Silicone and broke Windows when they landed....Metric Halo played smart and kept it streamlined and simple and made no big dick claims...
Apogee and Antelope reputations are still in intensive care...(for various reasons all of which were self inflicted)...
Frankly...if I had to do it over...I would probably get something from RME use a small amount of DSP on the way in and fuggetabout it.
