Hi. Is there no space above the UFX? How's the temperatures? No issues? I want to expand my UFXII with a Pulse and need to plan the location. Thx.

they're both together in a rack above a Manley Vari Mu (a lot of hot tubes) working fine no problem. I don'y have the manley on all the time, only when in use. the UFX and Pulse are fine together. Obviously if you can leave a space it 'might' be 'better' but i've had no issues.

What output level have you got your outputs set to…on the pulse 16?

I’ve now got the RME Digiface connected and using Output 1+2 on the Ferrofish for as my main outs

The standard Pulse is +20db I think, so, with headroom, I aim for around +18db and then adjust for the other hardware either being more or less sensitive.

I was unable to find any particular guidance to follow other than the usual if it sounds good it is good.

Yeah after a few years, I am still confused by the input/output gain section. I've just learned that for my EMU and Akai samplers, the gain stays all the way down and those things can easily fill up the meter still, where a few of my synths and other devices, need some gain to get them up there. I tried setting them based on what the user guide says trying to match them to the whole +4/-10 thing for each instrument, but didn't work out very well, so yeah I just adjust it as it needs to be when it needs it by ear and watching the meters.

There's this Ferrofish pulse 16 holy s**t and the following posts. This and the section in the manual should help a bit. I guess I'll be going with +4dBu to match my UFXII and will have to see how to adjust the Pulse.

That's the trick. There's no 'easy' +4/-10 switch like you might find elsewhere. It's just a gain setting with a very wide range, and the manual isn't exactly clear how to set it. You basically just have to plug your stuff in and set it appropriately that way.

I guess I could plug a signal that clips the RME barely at a +4dBu setting into the Pulse and adjust it until it clips there too. Could be wrong ofc.

i'm setting +4dBu when going to my main amp and +20dbU when going into my eurorack (samplers) - and i still need a boost there (+/- 3db)

Hmm I never thought of that. I have all the stuff for calibrating the SPL of my monitors, plus I've got a ton of old 90s/2000s sample cd's that came with a 0db test tone at the end hah. I'll have to load that up and check both my samplers, along with my console and see if I can make some sense of all of it this week.

Any issues cascading A32’s and Pulse 16’s into the same MADI stream?

And can I use a 16dx to grab the 16 onboard aio, say 8 Dante and cascade the 32’s aio into the 16’s MADI stream?

16DX & A32Pro can handle 64x64 channels max each via madi, and you can build that stream from each units routing matrix as you go through them.

Exact same setup here. Are you just running the Ferrofish as the Master still?

Another odd thing, I am 95% sure I matched my snake up to #s 1-16 but in totalmix I see the signals are coming in out of order. Not sure what the deal is there.

I noticed it the other night too here. Digiface is the master, both Pulse's are synced over ADAT and definitely not the master, both show the NO LOCK screen when powered on so I did that part right (used to be WC with my MOTU).

EDIT: Nevermind, just grabbed the manual. Flashing square wave just means thats where the Wordclock input is coming from in case anyone else is wondering heh.

So "no lock" is ok? It looked a bit nefarious to me.I took that plus the flashing white square as a red flag and switched the Pulse to the master.

But that said I have another Pulse that I want to sync as well. If Digiface can be the master it's a no brainer, but if Pulse #1 is the master, do I need to use a wordclock cable to connect Pulse 2 to Pulse 1?

I currently am just using ADAT cables and have 1 Pulse connected.

Do you have your RME set to Wordclock or internal? I just changed it to Wordclock and I get the blinking white square but everything appears to be working. But Internal also works as well, same blinking square. Maybe I'll roll with that.

'No Lock' on the Ferrofish is not good, that means there is no sync signal coming in. I see that on boot (the red screen on the right), but I turn my Pulses on before I hit the button on my hub to turn on the Digiface. As soon as the Digiface fires up, they lock and I get all four ports showing Sync in the Fireface USB app. I mentioned that because seeing that on boot definitely means the Pulse is set to slave from an incoming clock.

My Digiface is set to Internal, but my other options are ADAT 1, ADAT 2, ADAT 3, etc.. As far as the Pulse being the master goes, that I am not sure of when there's two connected. I would've had to figure that out had I bought the MOTU LP32 I originally intended to get hehe. Going by the options screen, I'm assuming when set to 'Master' the Pulse will sync over any of its available outputs, so the Digiface would sync using the ADAT port you picked from the Master Pulse, and the second Pulse would sync using the BNC, ADAT, MADI if you got it, whichever you wanted to use.

LOL I just noticed in the manual on the page discussing the Clock Source, it confirms again

"If one of the external inputs (ADAT, MADI, BNC or Dante) is used as Wordclock source,
the status screen shows a blinking rectangular icon at the corresponding port."

So yeah the little square wave just shows you where the Pulse is getting its sync signal from, so it's all good. As long as the Digiface settings shows Sync, everything should be fine. I'm gonna try tracking a couple 'WIP' pieces I have today just to see. One of my Pulses is filled with two samplers outputs so I can try a full 16 channel thing and see if there's any hiccups.

Yeah mine is working great. It’s easier to just have the rme be the master so it can clock both units with adat.

I started monitoring through Pulse outputs and they are super crisp. Sounds great. The rme sounds awesome too, but it seems like the pulse has more volume and high end.

Could just be imagining all this but that’s my first impressions. Love this setup.

I added a Topping L50 for my headphones as I found the outputs of both the Digiface and Pulse to be sub-par (taking a pair of the Pulse's outputs).

Amazing sounding headphone amp. PCB Boards came from Australia IIRC. Some of the components were hard to source though, especially the heat siks for the regulators as everything had to fit on the PCB spaces/components from the design.

Yeah I use a headphone amp as well. So I'm listening through the Pulse outputs and not the Headphone out.

Trying to route 32 stereo pairs from Dante to RME HSDPfx using a pulse 16dx.

Can see revives and transmits getting signal correctly in Dante controller.

Can only see first 16 pairs in total mix.

Can route the last 16 pairs to analogue and see metering.


Am I missing a channel limit somewhere? Everything is 48k, 64 channel. Should just route unless there’s an internal limit in the Ferrofish.

the 16DX only has 32 IO you'd need 64 IO to get 32 stereo pairs as each stereo pair is 2 channels.

you have 16 channels in and 16 channels out , that's what a 32 channel IO device means.

The 16DX (ADAT/MADI/Dante) can transport 64x64 channels in it's MADI/Dante stream.
Basic idea being that 4x 16DX can be 'Daisy chained' via MADI or Dante or even a mix.
iirc the MX can do this too (via MADI).
The A32 Pro & A32 Pro Dante too.


Have you setup the MADI/Dante routing matrix on the 16DX ?

Also, in hammerfall dsp settings, might be worth checking framesize etc match 16DX settings (page 13 in the manual)

I assume 96K framsesize needed + short frame.

That's also where you can setup the delay compensation value.

Frame size was the issue. Was at 48k assuming I needed to match Dante network, which you don’t.

Moved to 96 and they magically appeared.
