Let me preface that this is strictly my interpretation and as with anything else modular-related, there are no rules. Since you and I both like to sample our synths, I can relate, so with that in mind here's what I've done:

These are all modules that are easy to find and readily available. Shouldn't be anything too rare.

First off, I dropped the sequencer. If you're sampling, it's not going to do you much good anyway. Honestly, I kinda want to drop the MIDI-CV as well for this purpose, but since you like doing things melodically, you'll probably have more fun with this than I would.

You already have at least one Moog synth I saw above, so I dropped the Moogalike. If you just want that ladder filter sound, you can patch through your Moog. In it's stead, I put in a couple character filters. First off, the 4075. It's an aggressive Arp-style filter, so it should make a nice contrast to what you already have. I kept the SEM filter in there, but also added the Wasp filter because that is certainly a very cool filter.

For utilities, I dropped the LFO modules and went with a quad LFO to save space and money. I also added a Maths because there's always some time where you're saying 'I wish I had this module' and Maths covers a whole lot of bases in one module. To dirty things up, I added a CP3 mixer as well. The CP3 is based on the Moog modular mixer and gets a nice bit of overdrive when turned up. If you're after that modern sound, I think this will provide a lot of bite to get it. I also added an EON because like the Maths, it does a lot in a little space and includes a pretty fun little noise circuit. As an additional 'LFO', there's also an LS1. LS1 is designed to work kinda like a fader, but you can record the movements, so it can be used as a really fun and funky LFO.

Oscillation is where I tried to mix things up a bit. I dropped the Doepfer oscillators and went with an MFB 3-Osc for your vanilla oscillator sounds. In addition to the Elements, I added a Pittsburgh DNA Symbiotic Waves. This modules has two oscillators with separate outs so it can do some pretty cool basic stuff but the magic happens in the mix output where all kinds of weird effects are at. Also added a Doepfer QZVCO because FM sounds are a lot of fun and an A-112 Sampler because running sampled sounds through your system makes for some sweet sweet insanity.

The last section I messed with a bit is in the effects. Z-DSP seems a bit overkill for what you want, so I took some liberties here. I dropped it in favor of a couple different ones. The RT60, as I mentioned earlier in the thread, is a good general purpose effects processor with good reverbs, flangers, chorus, and delay. I also added a Synthrotek DLY. DLY is a bucket brigade analog delay so it's got some character to it. Set it for short delay times and patch an LFO to the CV in and you've also got a fun analog chorus. I noticed a lack of distortion, so I dropped in a Plague Bearer. Plague Bearer can go from gentle overdrive to insane nonsense and works great before or after the filter. The last one is a personal favorite of mine: The Zlob EQ. It's simple and it's got a whole lotta character to it.

Expert Sleepers audio accurate midi to cv modules (ES3, ES4)
Then you need attenuator modules, buffered multiple, VCA's and an envelope or two.

Absolutely, research research research. If you end up with a module that isn't what you expected, you can often still use it for other purposes and get at least some use out of it. Also, don't be afraid to buy used. Go on the Muff Wiggler forum and they have TONS of modules for sale, many of them at head-scratchingly low prices.

Buying 'fun' modules and supplementing with utility to get what you want out of them is a good approach.
I don't have that much, but every time I order a few new modules, and then start playing with them, my "ultimate goal modular' changes..

I finally broke down and got an HEK, but the early purchases were super basic: A multiples, a VCA, and a bunch of Stackables. Once I got an APC, that's when I kinda went nutty, and started selling and buying en masse. Within the first month of getting the APC, I was up to at least 12u. I kinda did it wrong because I did it without any real plan; I just started buying anything that tickled my fancy. I knew I needed to even things out by getting utility modules to go along with the fun stuff, but that's the only real planning I did. My system ended up being very hodgepodge because of it. It worked out for me because I ended up with mostly stuff that I love and use regularly, but I think it was more dumb luck and I don't recommend doing it that way.

If I had to start over again knowing that my end goal is a massive system, I'd buy a 6u or 9u full of basic stuff to get started and then just add the fun stuff to that.

Dude goes through gear faster than I go through underwear, so here's hoping I can score some of these modules for cheap when he gets bored with it.

The fact that this whole system ended up on eBay should be a warning to others: If you're going to buy a whole bunch of modules at once, make sure you've planned it out instead of just buying what looks cool. Many of these modules don't even make sense together in a system of this size: A six channel mixer for only one oscillator and one drum? An eight-channel trigger sequencer? Two wavefolders? One VCA?

I agree thats a lot. Thats why when I see high profile musicians that make you tube videos and things of does sorts, I know for a fact that companies feed them complete racks of gear. He/She has no idea what in that rack, it is filled with all the goodies us Slutz want.
