I'd be too tempted to try every one on a singer, to see what sounds best..

I have a shure handheld dynamic from the early to mid-60's that I use all the time, for anything that I want to put some extra "character" on. It has the ruggedness and usability of the modern shures but it has a thinnish barky bite that cuts through a mix so pleasantly.

It's like a '58 from 68' and I use it more than my modern Shures, seems like.

Here, ladies and gentleman, is my first post. I've been scouring this forum for long enough and thought it about time I got involved.

So here is my current selection of microphones. Less of a mic locker, more of a mic Tupperware container.

- SM57 x 4
- Beta57
- sE Gemini mk1 (great coloured vocal mic when you have sterile mic pres as I do. The presence boost may be too 'spitty' for some voices)
- sE 5600a mk2
- sE R1 x 2 (newest addition to collection and has had a lot of use already. Nice dark, warm quality. Compliments close mic'd dynamics on guitar amp and serves well as room mic. Cheap too!)
- Rode NT1A (never gets used for anything except outer kick. always find it too harsh and brittle)
- Red5 RVD1
- Red5 RVD4 x 2 (Only SDC's I have but are reasonably good overheads for the money)
- Red5 RVD9 x 3 (Lives on bottom head on toms because that's better that nothing, eh?)
- Some shitty dynamic behringer that sometimes gets used as a slam mic on drums
- DIY subkick (whoof)

And last but not least,

- sennheiser e835 x 2
- sennheiser e840 x 2
(4 mics that I somehow acquired that actually turned out to be great room mics on drums. In fact, a great deal of my drum sound comes from a spaced pair of either of these couples. Granted they do need rather a lot of corrective EQ and a generous helping of slam, but hell, i'm poor and they were free.)

and is that apex 460 modded? if so how are you liking it? it looks like it has the oktavamod headbasket modification but i could be wrong.

The pair in purple padded box are the little blondies/woodies .
And yes the Nady (same as apex) has had a layer of mesh removed by me and a tube swap to a mullard Ecc82 for less gain .
It has a slight issue at the moment with the cable connection to the mic being a bit loose when plugged in so any movement in a shock mount makes crackle noises :+( .
I'll have to remedy that then may look at a capsule upgrade

What do you use the beyer M500 on?

Can't say I have used the Beyer. M500 in a while, picked it up real cheap. I used it for my vocals for a while in the late 80s... This link gave me the idea to do a quick inventory .....

After carelessly nectlecting my mic locker for some time, I made some good eBay bargains the last week that added some special flavor and coloration to my collection. As I do drum recording with an edrum, I'm not in the need of a drum micing setup. Here's what I have so far:

1 RFT DM622 (secret weapon sm57 replacement - similar characteristics, but with a special vintage flavor)
1 Winston DM100, aka RCF 1612 (Sixties Vintage mic. Due to lack of bottom end and a dominant top end not the "mic to go" but very nice for old vintage radio effect or voiceovers)
1 The T.Bone SCT-800 (Tube will be replaced by a 12AT7 NOS Telefunken or RFT as soon as it arrives)
2 Uher M537 (very nice dynamic mics from the 70ies! saw the pair cheap on eBay, googled a bit and found out that a lot of renowend studios listed them in their locker - and was very surprised about the quality they still deliver. Easily more than ten times the value worth i paid).

And two cheap but not so bad sm58 clones (Behringer XM8500, X-Ray XR-MM102)

Also bidding on a Funkberater MD30-2 right now.

The Shure SM86 will get a LOT for the money. Very clear mid-range, no crispy highs, no super lows, just sweet, sweet CLEAN mids. Acoustic guitars, toms, vocals, amps, etc.

HIGHLY recommend (I have 4 of them)

They are a whopping $180 each and I use them twice as much as my KSM32 on most everything.

Yeah, but for the NOS vf14 Tube from his U47 alone you could buy two or three of the larger lockers posted here completely and still have a considerable portion of money left. I wouldn't call that "low end".
