Hello there!

I wonder if someone can assist me? I'm really late to this, but have just managed to acquire an APEX 460, from eBay. Paid £150 for it as I already have a Maiku 47 capsule that needs a home, and I've picked up a Cinemag CM-2480 to come along for the ride. I'm not an electronics whizkid, but have some experience with a soldering iron, along with decent instructions for both mods.

Before I start cutting and sticking, does anyone have a clear run down of the best mods (necessary in your opinion)? I've looked at the Fox website and can see the removal/replacement of various caps and looked at a few other sites that seem to have similar opinions.

I'm not looking for a direct copy of anything, I just like to tinker. If I get a decent acoustic guitar mic out of it, I'll be happy. It's just another weapon in the locker.

From what I've seen online:

Remove C9 & C10
Change C1 & C8
Change C6 & R7

And get a NOS 6072 if possible.

Is there anything important I'm missing? Or any changes to the power supply I should look at?

Go easy on me! I'm a newbie with a little bit of experience but most guitar pedals! I can see this has been discussed hundreds of times (from 2011), but wanted to ask, in case the last 12 years had developed further info!

Apex 460 transformer and capsule mods

All the info in there is probably still relevant. I had two of those for a while and sold one. The one I kept has a capsule from 3U audio, some cap mods and the PSU mod from Microphone Parts. Still use it regularly.

Brilliant! Thank you for the reply. I think I'll have a go and see what sort of creation it makes. I've only heard positive things about these mods, and hopefully the Maiku 47 holds up as well as its reviews.

Done! Successfully modded as per Fox page. The Maiku 47is great. I’m really pleased with the mic. It’s sounds wonderful. Recording this week, but it’s fantastic on acoustic guitar. First mic mod is a win! Thank you!

Well done! I put a $200 valve in one of these. I did not originally buy the tube for that, maybe for a Rode NTV? I thought it would be overkill given the donor mic price. Anyway, dropped it in and…. sounded amazing. Ive left it in storage out of state and can’t really recall the mods, a 3U transformer and a reasonably good capsule, but the Siemens?, valve just kicked it up there with the big boys. Can’t recommend that enough. Thanks for reminding me, will do the psu sometime too.
