Hi ! sorry for jumping in but i am about to get a pair of KRK 6000 speakers with one broken tweeter



I need some advice about the following issues:
1) i have the feeling that the cabinet is very well made. Am i right ?
2) is a replacement for the tweeter available ? if not what parts i could use in place of the originals maybe with a small reworkings of the xover ?
3) what is the crossover frequency ?

those are hard to find tweeters, Focal made them if I recall reading that years ago.

I have some old KRK with those tweeters, they sound really good. I took them from an old set of passives before tossing the passives to the dump.
I put the FOCAL tweeters on the Actives and it was mucho better than the stock tweeters. Those are really nice tweeters.

good luck but I dont recall having luck buying them used and if you do they are old. its a tough decision!

I ended up getting some DynAudios....sometimes obsolete parts arent worth the hassle and cash.

a tough decision. some tweeters sell for $35 some are $200+ for a single tweeter...with no idea where theyve been.

yeah if I recall reading some Led Zepplin was recorded/mixed on the series, a few pro studios had those speakers years ago.
there again, its obsolete parts and aged gear....a decision to replace parts or buy a new set?

It looks like an ageing issue ... they are black not yellow like the 1st picture.
The woofers look the same and the seller told me that they work.

Personally if the cut is not too low i like tweeters from Vifa, like the 19mm soft dome ... cheap but nice sounding. A very common tweeter in cheap British speakers. I would like to put as you say something more recent and decent.
What has really suprised me is the construction of the enclosure ... quite rock solid. And heavy.

i think i will look for a pair of new tweeters and adapt the crossover network.
I like the cabinet a lot ... seems very durable ... the cabinet.

If the tweeters aren't the yellow kevlar style then they've probably been replaced at some point. The original yellow ones (TC-90?) pop up from time to time if you keep your eyes open. I've also seen someone on Ebay selling replacement voice coils and have seen replacement surrounds as well. Haven't used the 6000's but have a pair of 7000's (same tweeter I think) and 9000's (which use a larger version TC-120?)

Hi thank you so much for the very helpful advice. All these broken tweeters tell me of some stress put on them. In my case the surrounds are degraded ... maybe they are in foam ? a friend who carry out surround replacement is willing to look at them

Got a pair off of EBAY. One speaker is 4/5 condition and another is 3/5 with chipped out wood. Its like hollow through and pasted down. During the transportation everything got torn out. Both work, but I have a question.

First, please look at the condition. And please let me know if I can simply place the woofer at a different angle, so that I can make new screw holes? That would work as a mounting fix, but would this work acoustically? Photo of this new placement included. Thanks!!

A fix for the screwholes would be BAKING SODA and WATER-THIN SUPERGLUE. Ive fixed the screw holes and replaced the woofers. Ive written about that in a diff thread but my reply got deleted by my mistake and I dont wanna write the whole thing again. Ill just say that Ive used the 6+1/2" DAYTON AUDIO DC160-S-8 for the replacement and they sound great up to 2k and fuller in the lows. Fixing the resonant freq of the woofer-to-cabinet and the crossover issue was done with the help of a hardware EQ and a crossover to separate to 2.1

I still have the speakers in the garage waiting to be modded
Tweeters have rotten surrounds woofers are ok but i do not like their small diameter coil like 20mm I prefer at least a 1.5" coil for the 6.5" units
The good part of the speaker remains the cabinet Ok its just made out of fiberboard but it is very heavy A very good point for taming vibrations
I am still looking for a 6.5" able to cover up to 3kHz So that any decent tweeter could do the remaining range

I have the old yellow ones and I haven't looked at them for years but the foam thing does disintegrate as I recall.
But of tweeters they were really a soft, hifi sound. Most are the newer plastic types which are fine. I had some JBLs with aluminium tweeters and while they were harsh to my ears, they reproduced a clarity where I still remember hearing a bunch more reverbs and details the more pleasant tweeters didn't. gawd I couldn't stand them long though. You got me thinking of those old yellow' pair , I need to get them out and boxed up.

Very heavy and rather refractory to resonate it is delicate because it is made of thick chipboard If it takes a hit it becomes sawdust
imho the midwoofer quality especially if pulled up to 3kHz is decisive for sound
instead of good tweeters from 3kHz it is really full the world
the only problem could be the reflex tuning that cannot be modified
In short a good base for a bit of diy
