I think the AT4050 would actually be great for exactly what you describe. Of course, you always need to watch out for proximity effect with fig-8, but as long as you have some distance, the 4050 will get plenty of top end without being too harsh. You can get one used for not too much.
If I were going to use a mic from my own locker for this application, it would be an OC818, but that's probably too expensive for the range we're talking about (although it's a bargain for what it is).
