For my tastes, the compressed one is too much. Maybe less compression would be good, not necessarily none. I don't know the 1176 sound, but in this case, in addition to sounding a little too squashed and boxy, it also seems like the compressed track is a little more mid-forward, borderline nasal sounding. So, maybe a different compressor, or just a lighter touch with this one.
Still, it's all just opinion. And I don't have much to base mine on. The closest I've come to VO work was recording and performing the narration for our self produced espresso machine video a few years ago. Used an MD421 and recorded in my untreated bedroom. The 421 was ok, but not my ideal tone. A few months later I got an RE20, and I wish I'd had it for the video job. I like my voice much better through the RE20. Oh, well.
