I don't think you'd go far wrong with a Benchmark DAC 1 - you should be able to pick up older, but still very usable, models at quite modest cost. It's a half-rack and therefore portable form factor, has conversion that still holds up and includes a good headphone amp.

...DAC? Has anyone compared to any of the Topping units or my current E1DA 9038 or even Benchmark DAC 1 which I have owned and know well - I’m assuming only marginally better?
