There are three partials in each part. Each partial consists of Oscillator + Filter + Amp (search for this file: "JD-XA_e01_W.pdf" and look at structure diagram). Digital Amp lets you set panning. So you can have one super saw left, one center and one right, each with own filter settings and envelopes. Set each slightly different, add a little Analog Feel (I prefer values between 1 and 3 for very subtle effect) and you are set with 21 saw waves going thru stereo field.

Ok, I have now completed the modifications to my JD-XA. I dimmed the LEDs using Staedtler black permanent markers, first taking apart the synth, removing the front panel boards and applying the black color straight on top of the smd LEDs illuminating the transparent light guides of all faders and pots. I must mention that this work was not easy. I had to use isopropyl alcohol and foam swabs several times and retry some of the LEDs + put the synth together and once more take it apart again to do further iterations to get uniform brightness to all LEDs. After about 5 hours of work and 10 times taking the boards out for modifying, the LEDs were dimmed uniformly. Painting the flat tops of all smd LEDs with the black marker drops the intensity of the illuminated rings to about 20 % of the original. The appearance is quite dim in real life, with brigtness quite close to that of the LCD. Funny thing, all of the individual LEDs have their own transistor + a current limiting resistor feeding them. I am wondering, what is the real hardware limitation to not allow dimming the LEDs in the menu. I doubt that the processor drives the LEDs in linear fashion to burn electricity into heat (thinking about PWM of course). Maybe they come up with such an update at some point, who knows...

Next was the Synthgraphics JD-XA overlay. I took it slowly, targeting for best possible alignment and attachment. This is a once in a lifetime fit anyway, so better take it seriously. I cleaned all surfaces with isopropyl alcohol at least twice before applying the overlay, because there could be some sort of grease-rejecting coating that Roland may have used. I used the method that Jamie / Synthgraphics proposed with tape alignment. Also, I had the power on all the time, as it helps in aligning the overlays, at least with the dimmed LEDs. The whole overlay attachment process took about 2 hours, alignment 75 % of that. I vacuum cleaned all possible dust out of the surface just seconds before applying the overlay, and avoided to touch the tape surface. Hands and the environment need to be clean. Worst mistake would be to have a large dust particle or simply a piece of dirt left between the overlay and the surface, causing a visible bump. I have seen such in factory made products too.

Combined with the dimmed LEDs, the JD-XA looks just epic now. The visibility of the panel is great, no more glare or eye-hazard with the LEDs. The white/silver prints of the functions are clear to read from a distance. Only some of the smallest fonts need to be reached closer to see properly. I left the wheel and button LEDs intact (not dimmed), as I never had any problems with them. They are bright when looked straight above, but viewed from a ~45 deg angle, they are fine. The synth looks more serious now, with a touch of Jupiter 8 due to the Synthgraphics overlay style. The quality of the overlays is about the same as my Sub 37, they feel the same. The surface of the overlay is really black, not shiny at all. I am just amazed how the synth looks. Please see some pics below. However, I must say it looks even better in real life. The red LEDs are not as bright as in the photos. The black surface and the LEDs are really difficult to capture using camera with any settings. This is, at the moment, possibly one of the best looking synth that I have available. I could only wish it had 8 analog voices and a metal chassis. But anyhow, it is quite perfect for what is available at the moment from Roland. Finally, it looks as good as it sounds.
