I've got a Roland MKS-80 (rev 4) connected to Pro Tools via MIDI I/O that I am trying to playback MIDI performances to. But when I record sequence data into Pro Tools and then play my performance back into the MKS-80, the MIDI notes lose all sense of quantization and instead are all over the place. It literally sounds like I had a seizure as I was recording! With that being said, when I'm playing live through the same configuration, everything sounds fine, it only gets messed up on the sequenced playback of what I record.

Now I've been using Pro Tools for MIDI for years with no problems and I also have multiple outboard synths hooked up to the MIDI I/O including a Juno 106 (same manufacturer, same era) and they all work fine. So the only thing I can think of is that perhaps there is some overhead data in the MIDI that the MKS-80 doesn't like (sysex etc?). I'm not a MIDI guru unfortunately so any assistance would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Do you have MKS80 midi connected both ways (in and out)? You have probably created a loopback situation. The MKS is echoing the midi back to pro-tools which in return sends it back to the MKS. I've had this happen with the MKS80 in Cubase when the input of the midi track was set to "all inputs".

I just have MIDI In setup unfortunately, no Out or Thru. I also don't have an MPG-80 in case that comes up in the conversation.

Hi musicsound-2, on your reply I'm not seeing anything after the "Try this ..."

Try setting to midi function 1 (on the front panel switch).

Make sure you are not drowning it in MIDI cc / clocks etc.

And the culprit is ... the MIDI clock!! Yeah I had the MIDI clock turned off for the MKS-80 in the past but I had to literally turn the clock off for all ports before it stopped interfering then voila! So that's that, thank you and do let your family know that there is a 4th Wise Man amongst them this holiday season!
