I have listened to some of deadmau5 but tbh not very interesting. That said I am sure some of his work is more involving than others.

Deadmau5 the remixes. Bored stiff. Didn't find it interesting at all, not even on a production level.

I know there must be some really cool electro-house out there, I like getting ideas from different genres,

Deadmau5 is ambient now? Maybe I'm just old, but even Deadmau5 is too crazy party music for me. tried listening to one of the links on this topic (Porter Robinson), 5 seconds was too much for me, I think I damaged my ears (and brains) permanently.

Soon I'm probably listening to smooth jazz exclusively. And I'm only 35, they still don't look at me funny at the clubs.

No, you're right. deadmau5's most recent two albums ("For Lack of a Better Name" and "4x4=12") have been hardcore electro house and dubstep. Definitely party music, not listening music. His second album, "Random Album Title" is a blend of progressive house/trance and is very harmonic and peaceful. I believe that's the sound that MasterShake is referring to.

there are 2 different electro genre meanings, just a fact. the old 80s style and todays electro house. actually today electro house and electro are 2 different things too but similar.

By the way, does anybody know where these guys branched out from? I mean, did this style actually evolve from old electro? (though old is not a correct term, there's still some genuine electro being done); I don't know much, but my ears can't really connect that sound or even arrangement style to any electro (old or new) that I've heard.

I'm not putting any of these guys down by any means, I have a TON of respect for Deadma5 for example, but it doesn't make any sense that some artists where producing stuff that actually sounded like it came from what is classically known as electro even less than 10 years ago, then someone mentions electro or electro-house and what I hear is something worlds apart ...

No. It's not the same genre changing over time, "electro house" and "electro" are different genres and actually sound quite different. That's why people make the distinction. Names have meanings.

The guy wasn't being snarky with you, he was just pointing out the difference. There is modern electro out there too, but it's not mainstream like electro house is.

It would be like if a new house genre labelled as "hip-hop house" suddenly blew up and then kids started calling it "hip hop". It's just not the same genre.

It's a bit too late though... if you search for "electro" on Youtube, most of what you'll get is electro house. I don't care what people call it, but technically there is a difference.

There's lots of stuff to discuss left even if everyone uses Google first - anything Google didn't answer, or anything that has multiple valid answers. If you have to start a topic to ask how many voices a Minimoog has, then you deserve a LMGTFY . What almost always helps to prevent LMGTFY is saying that you've already checked that and that you weren't satisfied with the answer.

Wikipedia says it's unclear what it came from. Personally I think the "electro" part was more about the sparse melodic arrangement - the drums and the groove do not resemble electro at all anymore.

As you can see, several people'll simply tell you that the electrohouse folks just appropriated a cool name and that's it.

Agreed, but the funny thing is, I gave examples of the music I've always related to electro, I gave a reference of what I knew about the genre for the sake of focusing on that particular theme, don't see why one has to be so cautious especially in a community I've been a part of for more than 2 years; but what the hell, it's all good, no harm done...

Aren't even the pop tunes David Guetta puts out labeled "electro house"?
I always thought "electro" referred to the more synth heavy production, in contrast to the sample based "french house". A lot of electro house is pretty melodic.
But thats just a guess of course.
