For anyone still interested in trying out a VST version of the Poly-800, BjΓΆrn has made several changes to the filter, envelopes and other aspects of his "simulation". I worked with him quite a bit on some aspects, and I know a few others did, too. Overall, I think he's a lot closer to getting the sound of the Poly.
It won't be perfect of course because 1) that was never his intention with any of his simulations; 2) some things done in hardware can't easily be simulated in software; and 3) BjΓΆrn doesn't have a Poly-800, and was relying upon a few of us to provide samples of different things.
With some of my own patches, this new version is almost indistinguishable. With patches based upon the Poly's "sawtooth" waves, the results aren't quite as close -- but they're still good. (Of course, this is due to the way the Poly creates the "sawtooth" wave, and the way it interacts wit the filter.) When you add in the fact that the envelopes for the oscillators aren't the same as the non-linear (and seemingly erratic) envelope for the filter -- and that no two original Mk I Poly-800s sound the same anyway -- you begin to see how large an undertaking it would be to emulate this synth. And that doesn't even address the Mk II version of the Poly, which had snappier filters and different effects which altered the sound quite a bit.
Also new in this version of Fury-800 is the "Fury-800" mode, which makes the synth more what BjΓΆrn wanted it to be; the Poly-800 mode is what Poly-800 users will probably want to try out first. Both modes offer some cool sounds.
