I know I can send out a trigger to my Juno 6 from my MPC 2500, so I wonder if you could do it from an MPC-500 which you could find cheap.
Give me a few minutess and I'll sample a trigger into my Korg ES-1 Electribe, and see if it can trigger my Juno, that would be cheap and cool too, but around the same size as a 626.
EDIT: No luck with the trigger sample, it would trigger sporadically but nothing you could rely on.
Another option but not as cheap, would be an Elektron Machinedrum, the MK1 now UW version, would be the most inexpensive but still have the GND machines which are great for triggering things. Plus, you'd have a killer drum machine.
Maybe see if someone has tried sending a trigger-esque sound from a Volca beats or a trigger sample from a Volca sample. In terms of price and size it would be perfect.
