Might get a wandering stereo image without proper linking. It probably works for some stuff. I did find a website offering a stereo link mod but it was expensive, 500 dollars.

Is there some sort of equivalent/opposite to capacitor droop in any compressors i.e. say you fed a constant tone into one that was above the threshold the gain reduction circuitry gradually stops working as much? Until level drops below the threshold n then the thing gets a chance to recharge.

I feel like that's the sort of thing I've made up in my mind would sound good/natural n maybe does actually exist whether designed or by serendipity.

I guess it could be some sort of component oversaturation. Again I've totally made that up in my mind but it sounds like it could be cool.

I like the Joemeek comp sound.

For mono, there’s quite a few good guitar pedals. I think the TC Electronic Forcefield is a Dynacomp clone and sounds great on lots of things. For a bit more money, the Warm Audio Pedal76 is… an 1176. Both analogue and still in production. The Forcefield is super cheap.

JHS 3 series compressor and Pulp ’n’ Peel are also worth a look. The Pulp ’n’ Peel includes RAT style distortion that you can blend in, which provides lots of colour.

Yeah. And tbh, on a drum bus where the kick and snare are by far the loudest and pretty mono and centered, everything will probably be okay.

I sold the 2 compounders I had and both were sent to the California side of the States, so they might be very sought after there.

Nice compressor but got no colour on it and I like coloured compressors as a painter likes colours.

The bass button gave too much boooooo.

You can get it with the mixing desk adding just more bass post eq.

A focusrite I would like to try is the red 2000€ one. Being told is top but never seen one in person.

tbh, for coloured compressors, I never gelled with the Focusrite Reds. I’ve had a lot more fun with 1176s, Joemeeks, and SSL style compressors.

Talking of DBX compressors I tried my MC6 on UDO Super 6 this evening. I think the MC6 is roughly based on the DBX 160 but in desktop format. I’ve never seen them go for too much money. There’s a grubby one up on ebay £90 n one went for £100 few months ago.

I’ve found with the Super 6 I’ve wanted a more lively response out the envelopes n I actually bought a Rupert Neve Designs 542 tape emulator (££££ I know) to see what that might do to the volume shaping. Turned out nowhere near enough without unpleasant distortion or conversely annoying low mid bump and flatness.

Inspired by that and this thread I hooked up the DBX MC6 but in the past with the DBX I’ve found it can rob a bit of top end. That’s without even much gain reduction/not dependent on gain reduction. So I used pre/post eq and also put a transformer DI (actually a reamp -> Hi-Z and then Hi-Z switched in on my desk) on the DBX’s output. Well it’s not exactly a side-chain but it does allow you to force the compressor n then make it up again after the broadband amplitude reduction. I used a greater Q going into the compressor than coming out of it (proportional Q on output as well but not on input which helped me dial in).

That lot got me the first decent even first acceptable sound I’ve had out the DBX. I’ve never really been happy with it before. I focused on reining in the squawky resonance (which was actually kind of the basis of the patch) on a fast swell Roland JX-ish pad n could shape the mid range.

Quite happy that I finally got a sound out the DBX. I was wondering whether I actually cared for VCA compression as I’ve not liked what’s come out of the SSL bus comp on my SiX either. Think that’s more due to the time constants though.

So I would say cheap compressors = can be improved with some auxiliary processing. I sent back the RND 500 series thingies n have two slots left, tempted to try something opto based n I see there’s an Alice (Joe Meek/Ted Fletcher) one that I might be willing to guinea pig on.

This little experiment also answers a question I had floating around my head as to how effective a single band, non sidechained compressor could be at shaping poly synth envelopes. Fairly successful is my answer though I definitely needed that pre/post eq.

At some moment in time B will announce copies of well know 500 series compressors. They already have announced pre-amps.
You already can get Midas ones which are priced at entry level.

I’m not sure what they’re going for nowadays but in the spirit of this thread I dug out an old Klark Teknik DN500 I have and damn if this thing isn’t (if abused correctly) a dirty little beast.

Stereo drums with low (ish) ratio, toy with the attack/release, 10+ dB of compression, limiter kicking in just on snare and the clipper enabled for chuckles and it’s just a lovely little bundle of crunch!

Sadly after two days she wheezed her last breath and died before even making it back in the rack.

Still turns on but something smells burny and stopped passing audio so might send it off for quick look and see if it’s economical/worth repairing.
