I had both and didn't find they sounded the same. You could get some similar sounds out of course, but to me they had a different vibe. I'm no sound design Einstein
(sound designstein?) tho lol...
To me the Slim phatty is warm and fuzzy, sort of has a 70s psychedelic vibe. All meaningless descriptive terms, but you know how it sounds anyways... I like that you can get 1-4 pole resonance, as it opens it up a little more.
Model D sounds big and futuristic to me (I know it's based on a much older synth). Obviously it has an extra oscillator and different filter options... The patch points also really open up your options, tho only if you have other modular/semi-modular gear
I had them linked up for awhile (either D into phatty or phatty into D), and really liked the sounds I got out of the combo.
I only sold the D because I got a Matriarch, but I did choose to keep the phatty over the D because I preferred the sound. Up to you which sound you prefer of course, but that was my experience. Both are great synths, so hard to make a firm recommendation.
