Does anyone have any opinions or experience with the new yamaha keyboard the MM6, dubed by Yamaha as the 'mini mo'... I assume this is because of it's sound bank being derived from the Motif.

Tried it at a local music store. very cheaply built. Sounds thin and the selection is not that big. Honestly it felt a bit like Casio cheap stuff. I wouldn't recommend it.

i wanted to go for the korg microstation (pro: step-editor / con: minikeys) but since its not out yet im considering the yamaha mm6 so here are a few thoughts/questions .

1. i need some 'bread & butter' sounds to play along with my dsi tetra and some analog drums. no touring planned so it'll rest in my bedroom studio so the quality (material) shouldnt be the problem. but how are the sounds, especially the natural 'recreations' (piano, strings, guitar, bass-guitar, percussion etc).

2. are the drum patterns editable or are they fixed?

3. are the keys good enough to use the mm6 as a master keyboard for my daw (currently using the edirol pcr300)?

4. any further options beside the yamaha mm6 and korg microstation i might condsider? budget is 500 euros.

Korg M50. Absolute steal for bread and butter sounds at that price range.

isnt the korg m50 is twice the price? it goes for 1k € in germany.

kann you edit drum patterns on the mm6? thats what is most important for me.


i now think go for the korg microx ... can get it for about 350€.

If you're critical about keyboard feel, don't get it. It feels awfully flimsy and does a better job of being a MIDI module that happens to have a few keys than being an actual keyboard.

Allow me to disagree. The MM6 is not any better in feel, and you would need to spend twice the price or go with an older used rompler. Plus sound-wise and spec-wise it is untouchable in its price range.

As an all-rounder composition tool it is a great instrument for the price. Most composers deal with acoustic as well as electronic sounds, and the price is right in it's range. Personally, I would save for an M3 (much nicer overall quality), or get a real synth in the PC3 which I happen to have and love...

For what it is worth, I do see the value and need for analogue, but I like the immediacy and variety offered by modern workstations...

I have an MM8. It is flimsy and not gig-worthy, but there are several usable sounds. The pianos are not up to Kurweil standards, but they're passable. The drums are not editable, but you can create your own using the sequencer.

I bought it mostly for the sequencer to keep from using up tape tracks. I can create the basic rythmn tracks and dump to tape in stereo while using the Roland R-5 to synch the MM8 to use those programmed drums instead of the MM8's. The drum track can be turned off while the sequencer is running.

It's not bad for what it is. It gets the job done.

so youre sayin save for the korg?? i have a prophet, and im looking for something maybe cheaper or lighter, or cheezier sounding for some variation- but, you say several sounds- the korg is gonna get more use?? or should i get the yamaha and just keep buildin??

if you really have no money, the MM6 would be okay. But if you can save for better, do. The MM6 is absolute bottom feeding are far as synths go... well, it is NOT a "synth" at all really - no REAL editing. Rompler sounds are okay most of time. I don't think you can edit the drum preset patterns..... MAYBE make a few of your own in the very limited sequencer (never tried that). Midi is COMPLETELY limiting. Everything here is absolute cheapest build quality
