Funnily enough I have the same crazy habit :-) I had another crazy thought That maybe somebody had real world experience Of using the midi control features

The compressor in it is crazy good and a serious contender to some higher priced analog hardware compressors out there.

The Heat is guitar pedals a meh filter and a decent but limited EQ.

The sounds it makes don't really lend themselves to what people want to use it for.

I tried a Baum and liked it, but honestly, I'd expect to pay $399 for it. $800 is just a joke,

I've had my eye on this for a while and decided to pull the trigger today when I saw that they're getting somewhat scarce. After the usual fight with my credit card company that I have every time I try to order something from overseas, I believe I have one on the way.

Oto's website says "April/May 2020" for the next batch. If you'd like one sooner, I suggest you get moving.

Overseas you mean US? I don´t want to rain on your parade but I owned one and sold it pretty fast. It is not bad sounding but compared to my sams amp Geddy Lee it was rather pale sounding.

Sold the Heat I and II. Its good on paper but the sound is mediocre.

I have all 3 and love all 3 but definitely the best value is the delay.

The Bim reverb is great but certainly doesn’t work for everything and the Boum is neither the best distortion, nor the best compressor - and is certainly not the best filter - but is somehow still great fun and highly addictive for some specific things. I find it pairs beautifully with FM hardware and a kick drum into the sidechain, for example, but it’s not essential like the delay, which is never disconnected for me.

I already have a Matriarch for delay and a Ventris reverb, so this was the only one of the three that interested me. I would never expect a compressor with so few controls to be "the best," but I liked the demos I saw and the overall simplicity. I'm looking forward to experimenting with it.

Yeah you know what I mean by ‘best’ but it was probably a clumsy point I made. They are all 3 great but also unconventional, which is part of the charm for sure.

As I said I do love the boum and for some stuff you wouldn’t first think of it excels.,..

For example, putting it on an aux send, before a reverb or delay...setup a key track to drive the sidechain and you get the filter and distortion colouring the sound going to the effect - a lovely
saturated input signal that is also ducking along to the sidechain signal. Not many pedals can do that :P

Also as a warmer/softener for taming FM synths or pushing sharp percussion back in the mix, again with an external sidechain...

It is great as with all of OTO’s other effects, rewards creative thinking but it not usable on everything is what I was trying to say.

Don’t want to put anyone off like - they are all great

I've had this for a few weeks now. I love it on drums -- not full-on 100%, just 20-40% or so can make a huge difference in tone. I wasn't crazy about it on synths, but I don't have any "sterile" or "digital sounding" synths that need "warming up," so I didn't expect to use it in that application anyway.

I'd still like to try it out on vocals, which was something I had in mind when I made the purchase. But these days I can't seem to find the motivation to do much, so that'll have to wait.

Since I own the analog heat (which is great since overbridge is a huge improvement), is it worth getting a boum too ?
I have not decided yet, and I´m thinking of getting a FMR Audio RNC 1773 instead...

Any ideas ??

Do you own any hardware compressors already? The compressor on the boum is more agressive. So for drum bus duties it would sound good, but guitars and vocals it would be too much. If you don’t have a hardware compressor get the RNC and then make the chain RNC to heat. My signal flow is leveling first then add mojo.

They're not really the same thing. The Analog Heat is focused on distortion, while the Boum is primarily a compressor that also has some distortion options.

RNC looks like it might be somewhat more flexible in its compression settings, in that the threshold and ratio can be adjusted independently. But it lacks a mix knob, so you'd have to use a mixer to work in parallel.

To me, the beauty of the Oto Boum is that it combines all of these functions into one box with a very simple user interface. One can dial in fairly extreme compression and distortion settings and then use the filter and mix knob to balance them with the dry signal to create more subtle effects. It's also possible to use the gate to get some very glitchy sorts of sounds. And it's quick and easy to work with.

Ok, I just pulled the trigger and ordered the BOUM.

BOUM is a very musical stereo unit. Hands on and no deep menu diving is plus for live -recording and performances. Can’t compare with Elektron devices (but never be their effect section fan) , but Boum is ok with MU/Euro filters and drives which is a good mark for me. Compressor is designed to be simple but combining compressor/expander in 1 knob isn’t very easy for me.

Are the 4 distortion generators analog or digitally emulated?

Everything is analog in the Boum, compression, distortion and filtering
