I think its cool if it works well, there has been wireless midi gear in different incarnations over the years, i don't see this as a paradigm shift but as a next step instead due to the fact that it isn't truly anything new, my hope is that it works well and doesn't have any of the jitter and drift issues that are commonly associated with daw midi clock sync, that alone would be a big step in the right direction

Lets hope that link is solid, and that they do something to help correct their normal midi clock syncability along with it

I wonder what the jitter will be like. If it is better than MIDI clock maybe we can have Link to MIDI converters for our MIDI synths/sequencers? Excited to see what this is all about.

cThe midi clock sync works for me. I have left the room for hours and let it sync to a mpc 4000 playing. I don't have expert sleepers or inner clock.

Looks like Link is not Midi based. I think it's good to rethink API's and networked Grid Computing in the Studio.

I'd like to see total recall, so that you can start your studio with one button (the electricity switch, now also connected to your iPhone ;-) and load a song and all your Mac Mini's get started up and get in sync, load their stuff, and get going. One click total recall in a network environment.

How many dual core machine's can you link? 6? That's a total of 12 cores in the network with 24 hardware threads at half the price.

Which never happened, despite being hyped as a big thing with Live 8 that quietly died off. Wasn't there some new way of sharing sets that was also announced with Live 8 that never materialized?

So...I'll believe that this Link thing is real when it's actually released, and as others have pointed out, hopefully it's better than the current hardware sync.

yeah, the bridge had way too many issues. and the whole process was convoluted. but i find it strange that they do not have a DJ oriented warping mode for long files. so that you could play them in sync, just like on traktor or serato. they could just buy the technology from any of dthe j software companies out there. right now it's such a hassle to try to do this, that i only tried it a couple of times and gave up. so much preparation needed ad the results are never as smooth as even on the cheapest or even free options out there. but maybe one day. that would really hit native instruments. havinf the ability to play with long files and remix them or add to them as you wish, on the fly, with push, not relying sync between different programs running against eachother, using the same interface etc.

Dunno, the sync seems to work on this Roland.





SYNC with a MPC 4000 is childs play, this I know.

Glad it works for you in your situation, elektron overbridge solved it in mine as well as several other folks that i know in real life whom also had countless sync issues

Link/wi fi is the new midi?

You are probably not doing it right, I find it fast and easy to warp long songs for DJing type situations.

Their clock sync is more reliable than Elektron one, but getting way more complaints.

In my exprience the midi interface also plays a role in syncing correctly. With hardware I had success using a mchinedrum as clock. But syncing with other people set up was not much hassle for me as slave with an RME interface.

+1 There are an awful lot of people using Ableton Live for DJ sets. You just need to set the first marker in the right place, check the tempo has been detected properly, and you're off.

I think this is awesome. It's engineers having a vision how things should be and then they code it. It's the biggest step I've seen since the introduction of the VST plugin API. It's fundamental technology. And that's important.

And it's like Micha from Ableton said in the movie above: it's just the first step.

I hope more DAW's will join this kind of innovation model and that they will also share these innovations in some kind of open ways .

I've been using the app Midi Link Sync on my iPad with the Tempest. From what I can tell, the sync seems pretty tight.

I'm surprised there isn't more mention of Ableton Link on Gearslutz. A new sync with no master and slave. So many Ableton users and no one seems to care that much.

You are right, i think since it's a new paradigm to some degree, people haven't wrapped their heads around it yet...

lord knows, I have been to busy to even try it myself, and it is exactly in my wheelhouse... (so SHAME on me!)....

been watching it from afar, and excited about it, and i'm sure I could use it in my workflow today, but time pressures etc... (what am I doing here on GS? )

It's really easy to get started...

although i have two laptops running live, i haven't used link between them. but it works really well with a laptop and an ipad running the novation clip launching app or the mixvibes remixlive. and it's so easy to use it. click a button, things are synced. no issues starting or leaving the session etc. wonderful. ableton just half made it up to users for their dodgy clocking/midi implementation. i plan on using either the novation or the mixvibes app in the live set to have some backup patterns in case something happens. i just use ableton on the macbook to just run midi to the hardware machines so no reason for it to fail.
