still playing around with the demo. overall, the emulation seems very good and offers a number of parameters for dialing things in more. as far as creative samplers go, it's fantastic. i have to get more into that end of it, right now i'm just comparing its sound to to some other 'vintage sampler' emulations. hopefully they'll be improving and expanding on it.

TAL - Togu Audio Line: TAL-Sampler

TAL-Sampler is not just a sample player. It's a full featured analog modeled synthesizer with a sampler engine as sound source, including a powerful modulation matrix and a high quality self-oscillating 24/12/6 dB low pass filter.

Don't expect a 40GB piano sample library with samples for every velocity or something similar. The idea is to bring back the fun sampling was in the good old times with small samples, fast loading times and an intuitive work-flow to create your own sample presets without getting lost in the settings.

It's possible to choose between different digital analog converters (DAC's) to get the vintage sound of different hardware samplers inside your DAW. We don't make cheap bit crushing or decimation on the output signal. We really down-sample the sample to the desired sampling frequency, then process the data depending on the chosen DAC and up-sample it to the desired pitch. Most DAC modes offer a LEVEL slider. This feature allows the user to reduce the volume of the recorded sample and decreases the sample quality. Load your favorite high quality sample and make it sound vintage and noisy. The 24dB low pass filter will like it!

The plug-in has four layers an can play four samples simultaneous. There is also a simple SFZ import for samples that imports the mapping and sample paths, but the plug-in also contains an easy to use mapping editor.

TAL-Sampler is available in the VST, Audio Unit and AAX plug-in format. You can load and play your own samples in every common sample format (*.wav, *.aiff, *.aif, *.mp3, *.ogg, *.flac). Import samples with drag & drop from finder or explorer. There is also an intuitive sample browser that helps to find samples fast.

Some nice additions like a vintage real-time time stretcher and the possibility to modulate or automate the sample loop positions.

SonicCharge 'Cyclone' (Yamaha TX16W) - totally 'OG' interface, unfortunately a bit of a pain to use. haven't figured out how to load user wav samples yet, but they do have a tool for doing so (might require conversion, etc). initial impression was very good, haven't put it up against TAL yet.

112dB 'Morgana' (Ensoniq Mirage) - my personal favorite, nothing quite like it. i've found that i prefer certain little things about it to TAL, but it's very close. something about how it processes the sample (dist/eq/filter?) brings out certain frequencies in a really pleasing way. easy to load your own wav samples. sadly, the developer passed away a few years ago and the product seems to be in a bit of a limbo (still 32-bit, no support?, etc).

NI Maschine/Battery 'MP60 & S1200' modes (Akai MPC-60, E-mu SP-1200) - the MPC 'emulation' seems a bit tame, but the SP modes can add some serious grit and artifacts to certain samples.

EDIT: hard to pick a favorite out of these, really. they all seem to react a little differently to what samples you load into them. with some samples i prefer what Morgana does to it, with other samples it might sound better (ie - more what i'm looking for from that sound) through something else. this reply made me fire up the Maschine emus again and i'm liking the SP mode in that quite a bit with certain sounds. for some things, i've found that an Ableton Simpler>Redux>Filter/EQ combo works just as well as any of these. take it easy on the Redux though, obviously.

I think this one is really good...makes samples so much more interesting...great for bass samples and stabs...good for creativity also....

I tried TAL-Sampler and ended up buying it.

In the thread on KVR, people also mentioned Morgana. I downloaded it and gave it a shot, but I just don't get it. Is it just bit crushing or something? Didn't sound pleasing at all to me, so I'm curious what about it seems worth $170? Are you using it on drums?

well, it's emulating a Mirage, which was a very early 8-bit sampler. a raw sample loaded into Morgana can sound like absolute 'shit' with the filter wide open, just as the Mirage does. (to get TAL sounding similar i'm using 'Sample-Hold' at 8-9 bits, SR around 24k, and some Jitter. no filtering at this point, though a fixed pre-filter filter might be nice.) a lot of this harsh ugliness can be quickly rolled off with the filter, and with how much is going on in the upper freqs some samples can suddenly sound more 'clear' and 'normal'. the trick is finding a good balance between, without 'darkening' it too much. i think of the multi-mode filter on Morgana/Mirage as more of a static 'shaping' tool. the Relative filter cutoff can be used in conjunction with this. one thing that i never got into much, but i'm finding is pretty interesting, is the ADC section on the left. the filter does some nice stuff, and the sample rate can be lowered for more of an 'SP-1200' ringing effect.

the first thing i notice about Morgana compared to the others is that it retains (and/or enhances/distorts) a lot of low-mid freqs and it gives everything a nice 'punch'. the others seem to have less accentuated mids. maybe?

each features TAL-Sampler, Simpler>Redux, Morgana, and NI Maschine 'S1200'. i tried to get them to sound similar to Morgana, as that was the trashiest one with no way to really 'clean up'. in most of the recordings the sample is played twice by each, with some space in between. the last few examples have some on-board filtering applied to tame the harshness a bit.

one thing i noticed is that Maschine 'S1200' exhibits something that i recall from older drum machines like the DX and Drum-Traks, in that the sound sort of gets "flubbery" and elastic when pitched far down. i really do think that even Ableton's Simpler>Redux does a pretty good job here.

with this sample in particular, i can't really say that i prefer Morgana over the others (i'm sorry that it clips at times). not enough freq content, i guess? i'll try to come up with an example that shows what i was trying to say.

I helped in the beta testing of this plug-in, and provided them with some recordings from my Emulator II for comparison purposes.

Using the right settings, it's practically indistinguishable from my Emulator II (but a lot lighter and less flaky).

That said, the Emulator II is incredibly hi-fi for an 8-bit sampler, as they themselves pointed out when they analysed my recordings.

I also have an Ensoniq EPS, which has much more of the "old sampler" sound than the Emulator II. I have not yet had the opportunity to compare them, because my EPS is currently not connected, because i don't have space for it.

Wow, this sounds pretty damn good I'm only tweaking with the default waveform. The reverb and delay have a lot of character and play really well together.

Yes! I thought this had been abandoned. TAL's U-NO-LX2 is damn close to a real Juno 6/60 so I'm really excited for this.

If it is polyphonic and comes from single sound card then somehow i doubt its variable sample rate playback. Because that requires changing the ADC clock speed for transposing samples. There are only handful of samplers in the world that use this transposition method.

which is incorrect statement. sample rate change would always shift harmonics exactly the same way because of transformation nature.

That is completely possible when DAC is emulated within the plugin. Just runs 12 instances of that, and sums it all, then HQ resample the sum to host sample rate.

Variable sample rate playback is something you can emulate. I think @ acreil has posted some material on this issue.

It's an emulation. Supposedly more accurate than most other emulations. The proof of that needs to be determined.

But i remember when living sounds posted a 48kHz soundset for TR-909. I remember when i converted that set to 44.1kHz and being pissed off after I checked if anything got "damaged" during conversion. To my shock harmonic content was totally different for the hats. I believe it was Sound Forge version 4. Must be some shitty interpolation algorithm then!

Anyway here is the same thing in Cool Edit but with resample conversion set to BEST method. 48k->44k1 Looks perfect.

Yep, resamplers have gotten quite excellent lately. Things like SoX or r8brain are pretty darn great (and SoX is free!).

Seems like you would need some way to keep the information that gets lost when resampling.
Maybe acreil will set us straight.
