Sorry for such a lame question but I am unable to find a decent mount that will allow me to set these up for XY and ORTF. Any suggestions or should I just break down and make a couple of mounts?

I've had good luck with Sabra mounts (I think that's their name - they generally share booth space with Taylor Johnson at AES)...

Or if you don't mind spending a (good) bit of dough, check out the stuff at AEA ...... the quality and calibration is nice. As a little project studio I can't justify the expense, maybe you could though.

I use a cheapy K&M unit. It works ok but I don't do critical classic and orchestral work.

just another universal one that will allow several positions. I have 2 and they are very handy. I can't remember the price but I don't think they were 'that' expensive.


There's some information on stereo recording techniques / positions on there too .... for those interested ...

They just look so cool with mics up on them! I think he developed them for use with the Coles 4038, hence the industrial strength build quality.

Chris, I saw the Schoeps' mounts recently when I was checking out some info on the CMC6/MK4 combo - they look like a good compromise between cost and function. I was wondering if you could use them with mics other than 20mm in diameter, is there a way to get an LDC on the Schoeps??

I don't know remember why, but I had thought that these were specifically designed for the Schoeps mics and were not easily adaptable to other brands. Have you actually used these mounts with other mics?

I could be totally wrong, but I remember some discussion at an AES show several years back about these not being "universal" mounts. I'd be happy to be wrong this time, because I've been very disappointed in most inexpensive stereo mounts.

My current favorite is the Shure A27M that sells for around $65. It is unlike any other stereo mount I have seen, but it works remarkably well. And its built out of what seems like a solid bar of steel - this thing will be found intact long after our studios have turned to dust.
