After reading hundreds (literally!) of posts from all of you scattered across the web it's nice to find a forum in it's early stages that I don't feel too itimidated joining. So... Hello!
OK OK here's my first question to y'all.
I'm going to be recording a choral piece (6 singers) in the next couple of days and I'm wondering about mic's.
I've recently begun using the Royer 121 (And thanks to your recommendations, I've finally found THE guitar sound!) and was wondering how their stereo mic (forget model number) would do in this application.
It's quite a nice airy room with alot of natural ambience and I'll probably be using a couple of Focusrite Red pre's straight to DAT.
Any comments/ideas?

I've recorded chamber orchestra, and symphony orchestra with vocalists using the royer SF-12 as the main mic, and a pair of Earthworks QTC-1s with a jecklin disk about 30' back for room. Absolutely phenomenal sound. You MAY need to add a little high end to the Royer (it's a taste thing - and whether you can still hear anything above 15K), and maybe narrow the panning a bit.

I've used the Earthworks a couple of times before as drum ambients, can't remember which ones (QTC or TC30) but they were silver, looked kinda funny AND sounded brilliant. Totally forgot about these guys.

But since I'm probably going straight to tape (sans mixer) I'll think I'll bet my squids on the Royer if I can find one to hire.

I have to admit, I'm a little more accustomed to recording Marshall's @ 11 than I am to lovely beauties singing The Sirens' Song so wish me luck...

I spent an afternoon phoning around Melbourne, Ostraylia to find someone who'd hire me a Royer for a weekend. No dice.

I guess they were scared I'd blow into it to see if it was working or something....

Not really any hire places around, I know last time I looked for a U47 for the weekend they were all booked.
Keep drooling over the SF12, not cheap though, I think it was a buy to try item if I remember rightly. So I did not go there .
Yet.......
I would be interested in the new Rode thing but have not heard all that flattering stuff so far....Someone compared them to C1000's (ouch)

What other mics do you have? You could take this as an excuse to get some high quality small diaphragm condensors. The Earthworks are good, and for the kind of money you'd spend on the Royer/Speiden stereo mic you could even get a set of Neumann KM-100 series mics with the interchangeable capsules. Or T.H.E. or MBHO mics with an array of different capsules. I don't know how far the deluxe location mics like Schoepps and stuff will set you back, but it couldn't hurt to look.

I have access to a pair of 184's. Not sure how these would have worked out but to be honest I think I was just looking for an excuse to hire a SF12!

Found a place here in London that would rent me one (SF12) for £25/day but as it turns out Radio 3 have offered to put them up in the BBC and record it for them.
This is great news for the composer but bad news for me... I was hoping I was gonna get a chance to oogle a few fair damsels heh

INSTEAD I'm off to supervise a photo shoot with a band on my label. Needless to say it's THREE BLOKES

I chum of mine is the only guy among about 12 babes, he is the percussionist.

They do spooky Gregorian / I dont know what 'old music' - and wear seethru white robes.. er COUGH!

No it wasn't the Mediaeval Babes. There's some vixens in that bunch though let me tell ya!

But I know a few of Katherine's (one of the main memebers) family quite well. Very good trumpet/flugal players. A musical family if there ever was one!
