I thought it'd be fun to record the bluegrass jam at my local brewery. It'll probably be a circle of ~15 musicians of various skill levels. It was indoors last time (noisy brewery), but I'm guessing it might be outdoors (near a busy street) next time.
I want to be as unobtrusive as possible, and I'm considering one of two options:
- a spaced pair of Schoeps MK2H @ 35cm, or
- a pair of coincident OC-818 @ 90 deg set to omni mid/side (one omni, one figure 8).
Either pair would be centered in the circle, probably just below eye level.
I anticipate not having any time for tweaking placement, just levels.
I'm torn between which pair to use. I like the thought of a spaced pair, but those OC-818 would give me multiple options if I record both sides of each mic (4 channels).
I'm even toying with the idea of setting up both pairs (6 channels), and using the spaced pairs as mains and the 4 OC-818 diaphragms as cardioid spots @ 90 degrees. Might come in handy to compensate for quiet guitar solos and noisy fiddle/banjo solos. It's a lot of gear for an ad hoc performance, but if the cardioid spots give me some flexibility, it would be fun to test that.
